WINONA, Minn. – The St. Olaf College women's tennis team was defeated by Saint Mary's University (Minn.) by a 7-2 margin in Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) play on Friday evening at Winona Tennis Center.
Saint Mary's (5-5, 2-3 MIAC) took a 2-1 lead into singles and won five of the six singles matches to record the win. St. Olaf (2-3, 1-3 MIAC) got a victory from
Ellie Bergstrand and
Emily Otteson at No. 2 doubles, as well as a straight-set singles win from
Greta Prokosch at No. 5 singles in the loss.
In doubles, Bergstrand and Otteson picked up their team-leading third win as a tandem with an 8-6 triumph over Cassandra Barr and Kennedy Morgan. The Cardinals got win from Laura Sonday/Colleen Lois and Julia Boeve/Ashley Frederickson at No. 1 and No. 3 doubles, respectively.
Prokosch improved her singles record to 3-2 this season by dropping just two games in a 6-2, 6-0 win over Morgan at fifth singles.
Saint Mary's recorded straight-set wins at No. 1, No. 5 and No. 6 singles and earned victories in lengthy matches at the No. 2 and No. 3 spots. Barr outlasted
Kellis Brandt by a 6-3, 5-7, 10-6 margin at second singles, while Lois edged Bergstrand 6-7 (5), 6-4, 10-6 in a three-hour match as third singles.
St. Olaf heads to Orlando, Fla. for three matches over spring break, beginning with a matchup with George Fox University on Monday, Mar. 25.
