Match Recap: Men's Tennis |

Singles wins from Loken and Wick highlight men's tennis loss to Tommies

OWATONNA, Minn. – Senior Corey Loken was victorious in both his matches for the St. Olaf College men's tennis team in a 6-3 loss to the University of St. Thomas in a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) match on Friday evening at Owatonna Tennis Center.

Loken and sophomore Spencer Wick recorded victories at the top-two singles matches for St. Olaf (1-4, 1-3 MIAC), but St. Thomas (5-1, 3-1 MIAC) came away with the win after winning the other four singles matches in straight sets. Loken and classmate Gus Fedje-Johnston also picked up a win at No. 2 doubles for the Oles.

The Tommies recorded wins at No. 1 and No. 3 doubles before Loken and Fedje-Johnston gave the Oles a point heading into singles. The pair downed Eshan Varma and Jordan Schenck by an 8-4 score line at No. 2 doubles.

After St. Thomas secured the team victory with wins at the No. 3 through No. 6 matches, Loken and Wick put together victories atop the lineup to record their first wins of the season. Loken defeated Nick Vossen, 7-5, 6-2, at No. 1 singles, while Wick finished off Schenck in a second-set tiebreaker to complete a 6-3, 7-6 (7-5) triumph at No. 2 singles.

St. Olaf was originally scheduled to face Concordia College (Minn.) on Saturday, Mar. 9, but that match has been postponed due to the winter storm in the forecast. The next scheduled match for the Oles is at Saint Mary's University (Minn.) on Friday, Mar. 15 at 5 p.m.
