Fawcett clinches match, women's tennis outlasts CSB

SARTELL, Minn. – First year Teresa Fawcett won the decisive super tiebreaker, 12-10, at No. 6 singles to give the St. Olaf College women's tennis team a 5-4 victory over the College of Saint Benedict in Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) action on Saturday at Sta-Fit.

With St. Olaf (6-5, 3-4 MIAC) and Saint Benedict (9-4, 2-4 MIAC) locked in a 4-4 tie, Fawcett edged Karsen Aune in a lengthy super tiebreaker to clinch the victory. Fawcett's win came after sophomore Sabrina Barboza won her match at No. 1 singles in a super tiebreaker, 11-9, to keep St. Olaf alive.

The Bennies took a 2-1 lead into singles after Tessa Rahrick and Mackenzie Schurhamer won a tiebreaker against Ellie Bergstrand and Emily Otteson at No. 2 doubles. Barboza and Greta Prokosch gave the Oles their lone doubles point with an 8-4 victory atop the doubles lineup.

Saint Ben's went ahead, 3-1, after a straight-set win from Lily Fredericks at No. 3 singles, but Otteson and Prokosch won the next two matches to even it up. Otteson posted a 7-6 (7-0), 6-2 victory at No. 4 singles before Prokosch closed out her match at No. 5 singles, 6-2, 7-6 (8-6).

Kayla McIver put the Bennies back in front, 4-3, by topping Kellis Brandt in two close sets, 7-5, 6-4, at No. 2 singles, to set up Barboza and Fawcett's match-clinching victories. After winning the first set, Barboza bounced back from dropping a second-set tiebreaker to take the match in a super tiebreaker, 6-1, 6-7 (4-7), 11-9.

With the match on the line, Fawcett outlasted Aune, 6-2, 4-6, 12-10 to win her second super tiebreaker of the season and give the Oles the victory.

St. Olaf continues MIAC play on Thursday, Apr. 18 when Concordia College (Minn.) visits Carlson Courts for a 1 p.m. match.
