Lannom powers volleyball to fifth-straight victory

NORTHFIELD, Minn. – Sophomore Katelyn Lannom had 12 kills on 19 swings to lead the St. Olaf College volleyball team to a 3-0 (25-21, 25-14, 25-19) victory over non-conference foe Bethany Lutheran College on Wednesday evening at Skoglund Center.

In the second meeting between St. Olaf (8-1) and Bethany Lutheran (3-6) in the last six days, Lannom tallied kills with just two errors on 19 attempts to hit .526 to power the Oles to their second sweep of the Vikings in the space of less than a week. With the win, St. Olaf improved to 17-3 in its last 20 home matches dating back to the start of the 2017 season.

Junior setter Lexi Wall recorded her sixth double-double of the season with 34 assists and 13 digs for the Oles, who hit .167 as a team but held the Vikings to a .029 clip. Junior Morgan Marxer tallied nine kills, while senior Lauren Rewers and first year Nicole Banitt had six kills apiece.

Banitt was in on a match-high three blocks, while senior Emily Jarnigan and junior Jordan Melz combined for 27 digs. Jarnigan made 16 digs and Melz pitched in with 11.

St. Olaf used a 5-0 run in the first set to take a 12-8 lead and made it eight points out of nine to lead 15-9 and prompt a Bethany Lutheran timeout. Out of the stoppage, the Vikings closed the gap to three, 16-13, before a 5-1 run pushed the Oles' lead to 21-14. Bethany Lutheran made one more run to get within three, 22-19, but two late kills by junior Summer Reid helped St. Olaf close it out, 25-21.

Lannom had six of her 12 kills on the night in the second set, including two in a 6-0 run that put the Oles on top, 12-5. A 6-0 run for St. Olaf saw the lead swell to 18-7, as Lannom added a pair of aces in the run. The Oles led by at least eight the rest of the set.

In the third, St. Olaf raced out to leads of 5-0 and 10-3 early on and led by at least five for the remainder of the match. The Oles had a pair of 10-point leads in the final set and closed out the win thanks to a service error by the Vikings.

St. Olaf, which is receiving votes in the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Top 25 poll, heads to the Bethel Invitational this weekend, beginning with a 5 p.m. matchup with UW-Stout on Friday, Sept. 13. The Oles face St. Norbert (10 a.m.) and UW-Stevens Point (2 p.m.) the following day.
