Winning streak reaches eight for volleyball after two more wins at Bethel

ARDEN HILLS, Minn. – The St. Olaf College volleyball team ran its winning streak to eight by defeating St. Norbert College in four sets (25-21, 18-25, 25-15, 25-18) and UW-Stevens Point in five sets (23-25, 25-17, 21-25, 25-22, 15-13) on Saturday at the Bethel Invitational at Robertson Center Gym.

In the first match of the day, St. Olaf (11-1) hit .324 on its way to a four-set win over St. Norbert (7-5), as sophomore Katelyn Lannom led the way with 19 kills and a .692 hitting percentage. Later in the day, the Oles rallied from a two-sets-to-one deficit to top UW-Stevens Point (10-3) in a matchup of teams receiving votes in the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Division III Top 25 Poll.

Following the tournament, Lannom and junior setter Lexi Wall were named to the All-Tournament Team following St. Olaf's 3-0 showing at the tournament.

Lannom tallied a season-high and career-high-tying 19 kills, while hitting .692, and added a career-high six aces to lead St. Olaf to its seventh-straight victory at the time. The Oles hit .324 in the match and posted hitting percentages of at least .366 in the three sets they won.

In addition to Lannom's 19 kills, junior Summer Reid, senior Lauren Rewers and first year Nicole Banitt were all in double figures in kills. Reid and Rewers recorded 11 apiece, with Rewers adding 11 digs, and Banitt posted 10 on 18 swings to hit .500.

Wall had a season-high 52 assists along with 10 digs, while senior Emily Jarnigan made a team-high 13 digs. The Oles tallied 63 kills in the match, compared to 37 for the Green Knights, and also held advantages in aces (12-5) and digs (50-39).

Reid and Rewers combined for 11 kills in the opening set, as St. Olaf hit .366 to grab the opener. The set featured five ties and no team held a lead bigger than four points at any time. With the Oles ahead 22-20, an ace by Jarnigan followed a kill by junior Morgan Marxer to bring up four set points and, after the Green Knights saved one, Rewers provided her sixth kill of the set to close it out.

After having just one kill in the first set, Lannom had five on seven errorless swings in the second, but St. Norbert held St. Olaf to a .135 clip in the set to even it up at a set apiece. The Green Knights trailed 10-4 early before winning 10 of the final 12 points of the second to run away with it late on.

For the second-straight set, the Oles built a 10-4 lead in the third, getting three kills from Lannom in a 6-0 run to establish the cushion. An early 2-1 St. Norbert lead was the only deficit of the set for St. Olaf, which got seven kills and three aces in the set from Lannom, helping the Oles hit .440.

St. Olaf never trailed after being down 4-3 in the fourth and used a late 5-0 run to lead by as many as 23-15 on its way to closing out the four-set win. Lannom and Banitt combined for 10 kills on 12 swings without an error in the final set.

The Oles closed out the tournament by posting their first comeback from two-sets-to-one down of the season by edging the Pointers in five. After rallying from 15-11 down in the fourth to send the match the distance, St. Olaf built an 8-2 lead in the decider before holding off UW-Stevens Point late on.

Marxer led the Oles with 14 kills and added five block assists, while Reid and Lannom each tallied 13 kills. Rewers recorded 12 kills and 15 digs, as Wall matched her totals from earlier in the day with 52 assists and 10 digs.

St. Olaf limited UW-Stevens Point to a .116 hitting percentage in the match, with Jarnigan pacing the Oles with a match-high 21 digs. Senior Haley Langeslag had 13 digs to join Jarnigan, Rewers and Wall in double figures. Banitt was part of six blocks while contributing nine kills.

St. Olaf got out to an 8-3 lead early in the first set and extended its lead to 18-11 with a 5-0 run later on. UW-Stevens Point rattled off 10 points in a row to take a 22-19 lead before the Oles got even at 23-23 with a 3-0 run. Out of a timeout, UWSP won the final two points of the set on kills by April Gehl.

A 5-1 run midway through the second set helped St. Olaf to a 17-13 lead, as Lannom had kills to start and end the run, which was part of a decisive stretch that saw the Oles win 10-of-13 points to take a 22-15 advantage. Banitt and Marxer combined for a block and each had a kill over the final three points of the set.

The Pointers opened up a 14-8 lead in the third before a 6-0 run by St. Olaf tied it up at 14-14. UW-Stevens Point broke a 21-21 tie late in the set by winning the final four points to edge ahead by two sets to one.

Reid tallied six kills and Lannom had five without an error on 11 attempts in the fourth, as the Oles forced the match to a deciding set by winning the fourth, 25-22. After trailing by as many as four, St. Olaf took a 21-20 lead after a 5-1 run and went on two win four of the final five points of the set behind late kills from Reid, Banitt, Marxer and Lannom.

The Oles hit a match-high .292 in the decider and got out to a quick 8-2 lead after a 5-0 run. The Pointers won the next five points to close the gap to one, but a kill by Rewers and an ace by Jarnigan got the lead back to three, 10-7. Back-to-back kills from Gehl brought UWSP within a point at 14-13 before Banitt sealed the victory with a kill.

Gehl, who entered the weekend leading NCAA Division III in kills, led the Pointers with 18 kills and 12 digs. Megan Lau tallied 13 kills and hit .314 and Tara Emme added 12 kills.

St. Olaf hosts the University of St. Thomas to open Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) play on Wednesday, Sept. 18 at 7 p.m. The Tommies are ranked No. 18 in this week's AVCA Division III Top 25.
