ST. PAUL, Minn. – The St. Olaf College women's soccer team scored the game's final four goals to overcome an early 1-0 deficit and defeat Hamline University, 4-1, in its Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) opener on Tuesday afternoon at Paterson Field.
Jenna Sampson gave Hamline (2-3-0, 1-1-0 MIAC) a 1-0 lead in the 19th minute before St. Olaf (4-1-1, 1-0-0 MIAC) scored twice in each half to earn the road victory. First year
Tessa Anderson led the way for the Oles with a goal and an assist, while senior
Mackenzie Schoustra, sophomore
Anna Newby and sophomore
Grace Maxwell also tallied goals.
The victory was St. Olaf's fourth in a row in the series with Hamline and gave the Oles wins in their conference openers in each of the last three seasons.
In the 19th minute, Hamline went ahead when Sampson scored from a free kick from just outside the box. The lead would not last 10 minutes, however, as Schoustra netted her team-leading third goal of the season in the 28th minute after breaking up the right side, holding off a defender and rolling the ball into the lower-right corner.
Schoustra's goal was the 26th of her career, moving her into a tie with Kristi Parks '04 for sixth in program history in the category and breaking a tie with Kim Carlson '98.
Newby scored the first goal of her collegiate career in the 42nd minute, grabbing the eventual game-winning goal from close range off a feed from Anderson.
Just 17 seconds into the second half, Anderson found the back of the net from 10 yards out on the right side for her second goal in as many games.
Maxwell became the 12th Ole to tally a goal this season in the 83rd minute, tucking the ball home after classmate
Hayley Hoffmann found Maxwell from near the end line on the left side of the box.
St. Olaf held a 23-5 advantage in shots in the game and got 12 shots on goal, compared to just two for Hamline. Melanie Hopkins suffered the loss despite making eight saves for the Pipers, while junior
Brynne Davis earned the victory with one save for the Oles.
Next up for St. Olaf is a home matchup with Macalester College on Saturday, Sept. 21 at 3:30 p.m. at Rolf Mellby Field.
