Wick wins pair of matches at ITA Midwest Regional

PETER, Minn. – Junior Spencer Wick won a pair of matches in the singles draw of the 2019 Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Midwest Regional and several members of the St. Olaf College men's tennis team competed in the Midwest Open this weekend at Gustavus Adolphus College.
 
Wick opened the tournament with a three-set win over UW-La Crosse's Tony Moore, advancing with a 6-4, 3-6, 6-1 victory. He then defeated No. 17 seed Lucas Nay of Carroll in two tight sets, 6-4, 7-6, to qualify for the round of 32, before bowing out to No. 10 seed Daniel Fouchier of Gustavus, 6-4, 6-2.
 
In doubles, Wick and Jack Leach won their opening-round match against Tripp Schulte and Patrick Anderson of Carthage, 8-4, before falling to Zeke Haugen and Luke Haddorff of Gustavus, 8-3.
 
Seven Oles competed in singles in the Midwest Open, with sophomores Tony Klagge and Ethan Bruha winning a pair of matches to advance to the round of 32.
 
After advancing via a withdrawal in the first round, Klagge topped Brian Trefilek of Carroll by a 6-3, 6-2 score line prior to being defeated by UW-Eau Claire's Luke Bailey. Bruha received a bye in the opening round before outlasting Jack Dodd of St. Thomas, 6-2, 4-6, 10-8 to book his spot in the round of 32, where he was defeated by UW-Eau Claire's Adam Burk.
 
Juniors Dez Young and Jonathan Rustad each won their first-round matches in straight sets before falling in the round of 64.
 
In the doubles draw of the Midwest Open, the pairs of Bruha/Henry Smith, Klagge/Rustad and Young/Tim Roback each fell in their first matches of the tournament. Young and Roback received a first-round bye before going out in the round of 32.
