Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Three late goals propel women's soccer past UW-Stout

NORTHFIELD, Minn. – Goals from Rose Sandell, Hayley Hoffmann and Mackenzie Schoustra less than five minutes apart in the final 15 minutes propelled the St. Olaf College women's soccer team to a 3-1 victory over non-conference foe UW-Stout on Thursday at Rolf Mellby Field.

In a game that saw St. Olaf (2-1-0) outshoot UW-Stout (1-2-0) by a 41-4 margin, including a 27-1 gap in shots on goal, the Blue Devils scored on their lone shot on goal of the game to take a 1-0 lead midway through the second half. The Oles responded with three goals over the final 15 minutes to pick up their second win of the fall.

After St. Olaf hit the crossbar three times in the opening hour of the game, UW-Stout took the lead in the 65th minute when Ariel Kuchta ran onto a pass from Whitley Carothers and fired past an onrushing Brynne Davis to break the deadlock.

Just over 10 minutes later, Sandell brought the Oles level, curling a left-footed shot from 20 yards out in off the underside of the bar near the top-left corner of the goal for the second goal of her career.

Less than two minutes after Sandell's strike, Hoffmann scored her second goal in three games to start the season. Hoffmann ran onto a ball from Tessa Anderson, beat a defender at the top of the box to get the ball on her left foot and bent a shot inside the left post for the game-winning goal.

Schoustra added an insurance goal after receiving pass from Anderson up the left side, turning a defender on the left side of the box and firing the ball into the lower-right corner for her second of the season.

Anderson had 10 of St. Olaf's 41 shots and eight of her team's 27 shots on goal in the game. Claudia Anderson made 24 saves for the Blue Devils but took the loss, while Davis was left with no chance on UW-Stout's lone shot on goal of the game.

The Oles' 41 shots were the team's most since Oct. 16, 2004 (46 at St. Catherine). St. Olaf's 27 shots on goal were the most for the program since Sept. 8, 2000 (36 vs. St. Scholastica).

St. Olaf hits the road for the first time this season with a trip to UW-Stevens Point on Sunday, Sept. 8 for a 1 p.m. kickoff.
