Landa's first-career goal earns women's soccer 1-1 tie at UWSP

STEVENS POINT, Wis. – Sophomore defender Kylie Landa scored her first collegiate goal for the St. Olaf College women's soccer team in a 1-1 road tie against UW-Stevens Point on Sunday afternoon at Point Soccer Bowl.

After a 26th-minute penalty kick gave UW-Stevens Point (2-1-1) a 1-0 lead, Landa scored from well outside the box on the left wing in the 39th minute for St. Olaf (2-1-1). Neither team could find a winning goal through two overtime periods, as the teams settled for the first tie in the all-time series between the two programs.

The Pointers fired the first seven shots of the game in the opening 20 minutes, but junior Brynne Davis saved all three efforts that were on frame. UW-Stevens Point was awarded a penalty kick in the 26th minute that Kaitlyn Hess dispatched to give the hosts a 1-0 advantage.

St. Olaf tied it up at 1-1 before the break when Landa fired a long-range shot from the left wing over Miranda Nieman in the UW-Stevens Point goal into the right side of the net. Sophomore Lizzy Minnerath earned her first collegiate point with an assist after throwing the ball in to Landa prior to the strike.

The Pointers outshot the Oles, 8-3, in the second half and a combined 6-4 in the two overtime periods. Davis made a season-high nine saves for St. Olaf to move to 2-1-1 on the season.

St. Olaf earned a corner kick with a little over two minutes left in regulation that eventually led to a shot from the top of the box by junior Maggie Wilson that went just wide. First year Tessa Anderson had the final chance of the game with just under two minutes to go in the second overtime, but Nieman made a save to deny Anderson a late winner.

Nieman had four saves in the tie for the Pointers, who held a 23-10 advantage in shots in the game, including a 10-5 edge in shots on goal.

The Oles host Luther on Wednesday, Sept. 11 at 2 p.m. at Rolf Mellby Field.
