NORTHFIELD, Minn. – Kent Hanson scored 19 of his game-high 26 points in the second half to lead visiting Carleton College to an 82-74 victory over the St. Olaf College men's basketball team in the first meeting between the crosstown rivals on Saturday afternoon at Skoglund Center.
St. Olaf (6-7, 3-5 MIAC) held a 50-49 lead with 14:31 to go before Carleton (7-7, 4-5 MIAC) went on an 11-0 run, that included back-to-back three-pointers by Hanson, over the span of 4:30 to take a double-digit lead. The Knights led by 10 with 1:16 to go but were forced to hold on after back-to-back three-pointers by the Oles got it down to four.
The Carleton win means the Goat will be up for grabs when the teams meet again on Saturday, Feb. 15 across the river at West Gym. St. Olaf had won nine of the previous 12 meetings in the series.
Hanson shot 10-for-14 from the field and made 4-of-7 three-pointers on his way to a 26-point, 10-rebound double-double. Alex Battist also recorded a double-double for Carleton with 18 points and 11 rebounds, while Jeremy Beckler add 18 points and eight boards.

Carleton started the game by making nine of its first 12 shots from the field to open up a 23-13 lead midway through the first half. Beck Page drained his first three attempts from behind the arc during the stretch, as the Knights connected on four of their first five three-pointers.
After missing its first six three-pointers, St. Olaf made four of its next six, as back-to-back three-pointers by sophomore
Joe Thursby and another by Weber quickly got the deficit back down to six, 28-22, with 8:09 left in the half.
The Oles climbed to within two, 35-33, after a layup by Diggins Jr. with 1:05 to go in the half, but the Knights took a 39-33 lead into the locker room on a layup by Battist and a buzzer-beating dunk by Hanson.
Weber made a three-pointer on the first possession of the second half and Bledsoe followed with threes on the next two possessions to make it a one-point game. A Weber putback gave St. Olaf its first lead of the game at 44-43 with 17:48 remaining.
Including the Weber putback, the teams traded one-point leads five times in the first five-plus minutes of the second half before Hanson ignited the decisive 11-0 run with consecutive three-pointers for the Knights.
Down the stretch, Carleton led by as many as 12 with 3:38 to go before St. Olaf made it interesting late with three-pointers by Diggins Jr. and Bledsoe 19 seconds apart in the final 61 seconds. Trailing by four with 42 seconds to go, the Oles were forced to foul and the Knights made four of their five free throws to seal the win.
The Knights shot 56.9 percent (29-for-51) from the field in the game, including 60.9 percent (14-for-23) in the second half, and enjoyed a 36-24 advantage in points in the paint. St. Olaf committed a season-low six turnovers in the game.
The Oles host Bethel on Wednesday, Jan. 15 at 7 p.m. at Skoglund Center.
