ST. CLOUD, Minn. – The St. Olaf College men's hockey team dropped its Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) series opener to Saint John's University, 3-0, on Thursday evening at Herb Brooks National Hockey Center.
Saint John's (6-7-5, 3-2-4 MIAC) got first-period goals from Davis Kirkendall and Peter Tabor before Dan Wieber netted a goal apiece in each of the final two periods. St. Olaf (3-14-1, 1-7-1 MIAC), which was playing its first game in 12 days, was unable to find a way past Mac Berglove, who made 31 saves in his second shutout of the season.
The Oles held a 14-12 advantage in shots on goal in the opening period but went into the first intermission down 2-0. Kirkendall got the Johnnies on the board at 8:05 on a shot from the edge of the left circle to the top-left corner and Tabor added a second on the power play at 13:24 with a shot through traffic from the right point.
After combining for five first-period penalties, the two teams stayed out of the box for the entire second period. Wieber grabbed the lone goal of the middle period at 5:05, tapping the puck in at the right post after Auggie Moore found him with a cross-crease pass.
Wieber netted Saint John's second power-play goal of the game at 16:17 of the third period after the puck ricocheted high off the glass behind the St. Olaf net and was turned in in front.
The Johnnies were 2-for-4 on the power play in the game and killed off both of the Oles' attempts on the man advantage. Senior
Noah Parker had 30 saves in the loss.
St. Olaf and Saint John's wrap up their series on Saturday, Feb. 1 at 7 p.m. to conclude Youth and High School Hockey Day presented by Schieck Orthodontics at St. Olaf Ice Arena.
