BLOOMINGTON, Minn. - Former St. Olaf College swimming standout Nelson Westby '09 was selected for the most recent edition of the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) Athletes of the Week Rewind on Monday.
As a first year, Westby picked up the first of four MIAC Men's Swimming & Diving Athlete of the Week awards of his career on Nov. 7, 2005 after winning three events at the Northfield Quad Invitational. He recorded a national qualifying "B" standard in the 100-yard breaststroke (58.30), which also tied the pool record. Westby also touched the wall first in the 100-yard butterfly (51.97) and swam the butterfly (22.55) in the winning 200-yard medley relay (1:35.76), which was a new pool record.
A 2019 St. Olaf Athletics Hall of Fame inductee, Westby was a four-time national champion, 20-time All-American and two-time MIAC Swimmer of the Year during his career at St. Olaf. He won national titles in the 200-yard individual medley in each of his final three seasons, as well as the 200-yard breaststroke as a senior, to help the Oles to top-10 national finishes in all four of his seasons.
In the absence of competitive athletics this fall, the MIAC is taking time each week to revisit some of the most memorable performances from the last 20 years of the Athlete of the Week program, which began in the 1999-2000 academic year. This week's honorees were selected based on their performances between the dates of Nov. 3-9 over the last 20 years.
