BLOOMINGTON, Minn. – The St. Olaf College men's tennis team opened its spring season with a 7-2 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) victory over Hamline University on Friday at Bloomington Life Time Fitness.
St. Olaf (1-0, 1-0 MIAC) got singles victories from
Spencer Wick,
Tony Klagge and
Dez Young in addition to doubles wins from the pairs of Wick/
Ethan Bruha and
Kevin Kalkus/
Henry Smith. Hamline (0-1, 0-1 MIAC) defaulted the No. 3 doubles and No. 6 singles matches due to a shortage of players.
The tandems of Wick/Bruha and Kalkus/Smith picked up victories by 8-2 margins at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles to help the Oles to a 3-0 lead entering singles play.
In singles, Young rolled to a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Allan Yang at No. 5 singles and Klagge dropped just one game in a 6-1, 6-0 triumph at No. 4 singles to give St. Olaf the five points needed to win the match.
The top three singles matches all went to super tiebreakers with Wick outlasting Tou Ger Xiong by a 6-3, 3-6, 10-6 margin in his debut match at No. 1 singles.
Nazeer Robinson and Blake Kuehter provided the two points on the afternoon for Hamline. Robinson edged Bruha by a 6-3, 1-6, 10-8 score at No. 2 singles, while Kuehter recovered from dropping the opening set to defeat
Jack Leach in a 4-6, 6-3, 11-9 match at No. 3 singles.
St. Olaf returns to action on Saturday, Feb. 22 at 1:30 p.m. against Bethel University at Owatonna Tennis Center.
