Game Recap: Men's Hockey |

Uravage earns men's hockey a tie with Cardinals

NORTHFIELD, Minn. – Sophomore Tyler Uravage scored the game-tying goal with 1:50 remaining in the third period for the St. Olaf College men's hockey team in a 1-1 tie against Saint Mary's University (Minn.) but the Cardinals grabbed the extra point in the 3-on-3 overtime on Friday evening at St. Olaf Ice Arena.

After the two teams were scoreless for the first 55:45 of the game, Saint Mary's (9-11-2, 6-6-1 MIAC) broke the deadlock with 4:15 remaining on a goal by Ian Currie. The lead lasted just two-and-a-half minutes, however, as St. Olaf (3-16-3, 1-9-3 MIAC) responded on Uravage's goal about two and a half minutes later to force overtime.

The game went scoreless through the 5-on-5 overtime before the Cardinals capitalized on the power play exactly one minute into the 3-on-3 overtime on a goal by Kyle Meeh. The game officially goes down as a 1-1 tie with Saint Mary's earning two points in the conference standings and St. Olaf picking up one.

The closest either team came to scoring in the first 55-plus minutes of the game came six-and-a-half minutes into the third period when Uravage rang a shot off the pipe. The Cardinals eventually broke through at 15:45 of the third, as Alex Rickoff found Currie in front from behind the goal for the game's opening goal.

Trailing 1-0 with 2:05 remaining, St. Olaf called a timeout and pulled Noah Parker in favor of the extra attacker. The move paid off as Uravage turned the puck into the net after the puck went up into the air on an Al Rogers save off a shot by Paul Stehr.

In the 5-on-5 overtime, the Oles got three shots on goal compared to just one for the Cardinals but were whistled for a minor penalty with 56 seconds remaining in the period. The penalty carried over into the 3-on-3 session, creating a 4-on-3 power play for Saint Mary's, which the visitors cashed in on as Meeh fired the puck in from the right side to snatch the extra point.

St. Olaf outshot Saint Mary's by a 39-31 margin in the game. Rogers stopped 38 of the 39 shots he faced for the Cardinals, while Parker saved 30 of the 31 he faced for the Oles.

The teams conclude their series on Saturday, Feb. 15 at 7 p.m. at Saint Mary's Ice Arena in Winona.
