Wick, Klagge post singles wins, men's tennis drops pair of matches in Iowa

GRINNELL, Iowa – The St. Olaf College dropped a pair of matches on Saturday, falling 7-2 to Concordia University (Neb.) and 9-0 to host Grinnell College at Bear Center Field House.

St. Olaf (1-4) started the day by getting singles victories from junior Spencer Wick and sophomore Tony Klagge in the 7-2 loss to Concordia (3-3). In the second of back-to-back matches for the Oles, Grinnell (8-2) swept the nine matches to remain unbeaten in four home matches this season.

In the first match of the day, Concordia used a doubles sweep to take a 3-0 lead on its way to the 7-2 victory. The Oles won at least four games in all three of the doubles matches, with Wick and classmate Dez Young dropping their match at No. 2 doubles in a tiebreaker.

Wick cruised to a 6-0 win in the first set of his match at No. 1 singles before his opponent retired, giving Wick his fourth victory of the season. Klagge picked up his third win of the season with a 6-3, 6-4 triumph at No. 5 singles.

Sophomore Ethan Bruha played the lone three-set match of the day, winning the first set before his opponent, Eduardo Rojas, rallied for a 4-6, 6-0, 6-2 win.

Grinnell proved to be too much for St. Olaf in its second match of the day as the Pioneers won each of the six singles matches in straight sets after sweeping the three doubles matches.

Bruha and Klagge nearly put a point on the board for the Oles in the final doubles match on court but fell in a tiebreaker, 7-4, at No. 3 doubles.

The closest score line of the six singles matches was at No. 6 singles, where Jack Lunn defeated sophomore Tim Roback by a 6-3, 7-5 margin.

St. Olaf returns to Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) play against nationally-ranked Gustavus Adolphus College on Saturday, Mar. 14 at 4 p.m. in Owatonna.
