WINONA, Minn. – Senior
Lucia Ranallo netted her second goal of the season as the St. Olaf College women's soccer team was defeated, 3-1, by first-place Saint Mary's University on Tuesday afternoon at Ochrymowycz Field.
Saint Mary's (11-2-1, 5-1-1 MIAC) built a 3-0 lead on goals by Claire Fletcher, Haddy Falkman, and Jordyn Matthews before Ranallo got St. Olaf (4-7-1, 2-5-0 MIAC) on the board in the 77th minute. With the win, the Cardinals remained in a tie for first place in the conference standings with St. Kate's, which rallied for a 3-2 victory over last-place Concordia-Moorhead on Tuesday.
Fletcher opened the scoring for Saint Mary's in the 17th minute on a well-worked counter attack by the hosts. After clearing the ball up field, Matthews got the ball in the offensive half on the right and played it into the middle to Arriaga, who dropped it back for Fletcher. Fletcher then fired a shot off the underside of the crossbar and in from outside the box.
St. Olaf outshot Saint Mary's by a 9-4 margin in the opening 45 minutes but trailed, 1-0, at the break. Less than eight minutes into the second half, the Cardinals doubled their lead when Falkman fired in a shot from the right side of the box off of another assist by Arriaga.
Matthews extended Saint Mary's lead to 3-0 in the 62nd minute by curling a free kick into the top-left corner of the net from just outside of the box. Fifteen minutes later, Ranallo got a consolation goal for St. Olaf, pouncing on a rebound in the box after Madison Mora made a pair of saves to deny senior
Grace Maxwell.
Down by two, the Oles continued to push for more goals and had two scoring chances in the final 10 minutes, but Mora made an 81st-minute save on a header by first year
Faith Yi and got down to save a Maxwell shot from the right side of the box inside the final minute.
Mora picked up the win for Saint Mary's with an eight-save afternoon, while senior
Brynne Davis and junior
Grace Sprangers had two saves apiece for St. Olaf. Davis played the opening 63 minutes before giving way for Sprangers with the Cardinals ahead 3-0.
