NORTHFIELD, Minn. – For the fourth time this season, the St. Olaf College women's soccer team was defeated by a 1-0 margin in Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) play, as the Oles fell to Gustavus Adolphus College on Senior Day on Saturday afternoon at Rolf Mellby Field.
Lillian Selberg scored the lone goal of the game in the 62nd minutes for Gustavus (7-7-0, 4-4-0 MIAC), which remained in the thick of the race for a spot in the MIAC Playoffs with the win. St. Olaf (4-8-1, 2-6-0 MIAC) outshot the Gusties by a 21-10 margin in the game but was unable to get anything past Abby Goodnow, who made eight saves in the shutout for the visitors.
Prior to the game, the Oles recognized their nine-member senior class of
Brynne Davis,
Aubrey Sewell,
Lizzy Minnerath,
Hayley Hoffmann,
Grace Maxwell,
Lucia Ranallo,
Kylie Landa,
Kate Oehm, and
Anna Newby for their dedication to the program over their careers. All nine started the game as well.
Selberg provided the game's only goal for the Gusties early in the second half, sending a right-footed shot into the top-left corner to give Davis no chance. Davis had seven saves in the game, including a pair of saves rushing off her line to thwart a Gustavus attacker, but took the loss.
The closest St. Olaf came to a tying goal after the Gusties took the lead was in the 74th minute when Goodno produced back-to-back saves to deny Hoffmann on a free kick from just outside the box and junior
Mae Guetschow on the rebound.
The Oles travel to De Pere, Wis. to face non-conference foe St. Norbert College on Tuesday, Oct. 19 at 3:30 p.m.
