Madison Gully and sophomore
Catherine Moore combined for 37 kills as the St. Olaf College volleyball team won a tightly-contested four-set match (25-22, 25-27, 25-22, 25-23) over Augsburg University on Saturday night at Si Melby Hall.
Gully recorded a match-high 19 kills while hitting .395 and Moore added 18 kills of her own as St. Olaf (10-11, 5-2 MIAC) picked up its fifth-straight win in the series against Augsburg (12-9, 4-3 MIAC). The victory also gave the Oles sole possession of fourth place in the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) standings as the two teams began the night tied for the fourth spot.
In addition to the big nights from Gully and Moore, junior
Christina Cheng was also in double figures in kills with a 10-kill, 14-assist double-double – her second of the season. Senior setter
Brynne Gray and first year setter
Waverly Thao both had double-doubles as well, as Gray had 32 assists and 17 digs and Thao added 25 assists and 13 digs.
Five Oles were in double figures in digs in the win, led by junior
Selena Rodriguez with 19 to go with eight assists. Sophomore
Kylie Reardon pitched in with 12 digs and had three of St. Olaf's four aces in the win. Sophomore
Anysia Caille was in on a career-high seven blocks and junior
Nicole Banitt had six block assists.
Coming off of a tough five-set loss at No. 23 Bethel the night before, St. Olaf started quickly, jumping out to a 7-1 lead to start the match thanks to four early kills from Moore, who had seven kills in the set. Augsburg got within a point at 19-18 but the Oles managed to hold on and never trailed in the set, winning it, 25-22.
The second set featured 12 ties and six lead changes before eventually going the way of the Auggies, 27-25. The hosts held a 21-16 lead before the Oles won four-straight points to get within one. St. Olaf had a pair of set points at 24-23 and 25-24, but Augsburg saved both of them before winning the final three points, including back-to-back aces by Izzy Barr on the final two points, to even the match at a set apiece.
In the third set, it was Augsburg's turn to surge out to a 6-1 lead early on. Late in the set, St. Olaf broke a 19-19 tie – the seventh tie of the set – by winning three consecutive points to take the lead for good. Leading 23-22, the Oles closed out the set thanks to an attack error by the Auggies and a kill by Moore to go ahead two sets to one.
The Auggies opened up an 18-13 lead in the fourth set before the Oles put together a late rally to finish off the match in four sets. With Augsburg up by five, St. Olaf won the next nine points to take a four-point advantage and held on as Lannom delivered a kill on the Oles' fourth match point to seal the victory.
St. Olaf hosts the College of Saint Benedict on Faculty/Staff Appreciation Night on Friday, Oct. 22 at 7 p.m. at Skoglund Center.
