Football can't slow down Augsburg in road loss

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – Cade Sheehan threw for 405 yards and six touchdowns to lead Augsburg University to a 56-28 victory over the St. Olaf College football team on Saturday afternoon at a rainy Edor Nelson Field.

Sheehan threw three touchdowns in each half for Augsburg (2-2, 2-0 MIAC), which racked up an even 500 yards of offense in the win. First year Christian Graske caught a 61-yard touchdown and ran for a 31-yard score for St. Olaf (2-2, 1-1 MIAC), which also got a 58-yard touchdown reception from senior Gabe Alada and a two-yard fumble recovery score from Nikoloz Vasadze in the loss.

Braden Tretter and Dominic Smith were Sheehan's favorite targets in the win, as Tretter caught nine passes for 144 yards and two touchdowns, while Smith had 10 catches for 136 yards and four scores. Sheehan was 35-for-51 in the win.

Graske's two long touchdowns were the highlight offensive for St. Olaf, which was held to 55 rushing yards on 20 attempts on the afternoon. Senior Lars Prestemon was 11-for-26 for 260 yards with two touchdowns and one interception and junior Payton Schott hauled in five receptions for 86 yards for the Oles, who were just 2-for-10 on third down.

Augsburg opened the scoring on its second possession of the game on a 13-yard pass from Sheehan to Tretter for the lone score of the opening quarter. After ending the first quarter in the red zone, the Auggies got a three-yard touchdown run from Isaiah Thompson on the third play of the second quarter to go up 13-0 after the extra point was no good.

St. Olaf got on the board quickly on its next possession as Prestemon connected with Graske for a 61-yard touchdown on a third-and-seven play to make it a 13-7 game early in the second quarter. The Oles forced a three-and-out on the next Augsburg possession and made it two touchdowns in the space of 2:12 when Prestemon found Alada for a 58-yard score to give St. Olaf a 14-13 lead.

The Auggies went back ahead on a 31-yard pass from Sheehan to Smith with 6:57 left in the opening half and got the two-point conversion to go up 21-14. Vasadze stripped Sheehan on a sack and returned the ball two yards for a score to knot the game at 21-21 later in the quarter, but Augsburg scored on a 23-yard pass from Sheehan to Smith with 21 seconds left in the half to lead 28-21 at the break.

Smith's third touchdown reception of the game – a 10-yarder – midway through the third quarter pushed the Auggies' lead back to two scores, but the Oles answered on their next possession on a 31-yard third-down rush by Graske to get back within six, 34-28.

Graske's second score of the game, however, would be the final points of the day for St. Olaf as Augsburg rattled off the final three touchdowns of the game over the final 16-plus minutes.

Senior Brandon Foster had a game- and season-high 14 tackles for the Oles, while sophomore Ben Hestorff added a season-high 10 to go with one sack. Vasadze had nine tackles, including 2.5 for a loss and 1.5 sacks, and had a second forced fumble in addition to his strip sack.

St. Olaf hosts crosstown-rival Carleton on Saturday, Oct. 9 in a 1 p.m. kickoff on Homecoming and Family Weekend. The Knights (4-0, 2-0 MIAC) remained unbeaten by defeating Macalester, 24-10, on Saturday.
