Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Two late goals give men's soccer win over No. 22 Carleton

NORTHFIELD, Minn. – The regionally-ranked St. Olaf College men's soccer team used late goals from sophomore Casey McCloskey and first year Shea Bechtel to down crosstown-rival and No. 22-ranked Carleton College by a 3-1 score on Saturday afternoon at Rolf Mellby Field.

After the teams traded first-half goals, McCloskey broke the tie in the 82nd minute and Bechtel iced the game in the final seconds to give St. Olaf (8-1-1, 4-0-0 MIAC) its first win over a nationally-ranked opponent since a 1-0 victory over No. 14 Macalester in the second round of the NCAA Tournament on Nov. 14, 2015. The win was also the first for the Oles against Carleton (5-3-2, 3-2-0 MIAC) since Nov. 7, 2013.

At 8-1-1 overall, St. Olaf is off to its best 10-game start to a season since the 2011 team also started 8-1-1. The Oles were ranked No. 5 in the region this week by the United Soccer Coaches, while the Knights were No. 2.

Sophomore Clemente Arcuch Puig opened the scoring for St. Olaf in the 21st minute, heading in a rebound in front of the net after Carleton goalkeeper Alexei Thomas tipped a header by senior Thierno Gueye onto the crossbar after a corner kick. The goal was Arcuch Puig's first of the season.

The Oles' lead barely lasted five minutes, however, as Tonny Aton brought the Knights level in the 26th minute as Aton cut onto his right foot in the box after collecting a pass from Charlie Hall. Thomas made a pair of diving saves in the final 15 minutes of the half to keep the game tied at the break.

Sophomore Austin Williams denied Aton his second goal of the game in the 63rd minute, getting down to stop Aton's shot from near the penalty spot in a 1-on-1. Twenty minutes later, St. Olaf took the lead for good as McCloskey got on the end of a pass from sophomore Ethan Kilmer in the box and provided the finish for his team-leading seventh goal of the season – his fourth game-winner – in the 82nd minute.

With the Oles still leading by one in the final minute, Carleton generated a chance to tie the game but the St. Olaf defense blocked a shot by Justin Crawmer. After the Oles cleared the ball up field, McCloskey ran most of the length of the field before passing the ball to Bechtel to slot home with four seconds left to seal the win.

St. Olaf outshot Carleton by a 22-8 margin in the game. Williams earned his eighth win of the season with two saves on the afternoon, while Thomas took the loss despite making five saves.

The Oles take a break from conference play when they host UW-Superior on Tuesday, Oct. 5 at 4 p.m.
