NORTHFIELD, Minn. – The St. Olaf College women's soccer team suffered a hard-luck 1-0 loss to crosstown-rival Carleton College on a late deflected goal on Saturday afternoon at Rolf Mellby Field.
Cate Patterson scored the lone goal of the game for Carleton (6-2-2, 3-2-0 MIAC) in the 76th minute as her cross from the right deflected in off a St. Olaf (4-5-1, 2-3-0 MIAC) defender for the lone goal of the game. The Oles had a 21-14 advantage in shots in the game but could not find a goal in their third 1-0 loss in conference play this season.
Senior
Brynne Davis was called into action early for the Oles, rushing off her line to deny Bella Bettner in the fifth minute after Bettner got in behind the St. Olaf defense. The stop was one of four for Davis in the opening half as the teams were scoreless at the break.
Less than five minutes into the second half, senior
Grace Maxwell drew a save from Carleton goalkeeper Keya Mookencherry, who could not hold Maxwell's long-range shot but covered up the rebound. A little more than five minutes later, Maxwell again fired a shot on goal, this time on a counter attack after being fed the ball by junior
Tessa Anderson, but Mookencherry parried the shot out for a corner.
St. Olaf had another chance in the 59th minute when Maxwell got the ball to an open
Anna Newby near the top of the box but Newby fired a shot over the goal as the game remained scoreless. Junior
Salem Birkholz also came close to scoring 10 minutes later when her left-footed shot from outside the box went just over the crossbar.
After Patterson's goal, the Oles had one last chance when Maxwell got on the end of a free kick swung into the box by
Aubrey Sewell, but her redirected shot flew wide of the left post. Mookencherry earned the shutout win with a five-save afternoon, while Davis had five saves in the loss.
St. Olaf returns to action next Saturday, Oct. 9, at Saint Ben's at 3:30 p.m.
