No. 10 Oles clinch share of MIAC regular-season crown with win in Moorhead

MOORHEAD, Minn. – Sophomore Hakeem Morgan had two goals and two assists as the No. 10-ranked St. Olaf College men's soccer team clinched at least a share of the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) regular-season title with a 6-2 victory at Concordia-Moorhead on Saturday.

After being named the MIAC Men's Soccer Athlete of the Week earlier in the week, Morgan tallied two goals and two assists and classmate Clemente Arcuch Puig added two goals of his own to lead the way for St. Olaf (14-1-1, 8-0-0 MIAC), which ran its winning streak to 12 games with the win over Concordia (5-11-0, 2-6-0 MIAC). The 12-game winning streak is the second-longest run in a single season in recorded program history.

With two games to play in the regular season, the Oles clinched at least a share of the regular-season conference crown, marking the seventh regular-season title in program history (1984, 1992, 1998, 2004, 2011, 2014). St. Olaf needs just one point over its final two games to clinch the title outright.

Morgan set up goals by Arcuch Puig and Bechtel 22 seconds apart in the early goings for the Oles, with both goals coming in the 12th minute. Bechtel's tally was his seventh in the last nine games and brought his total to seven for the season.

After being the provider on the first two goals, Morgan got his first goal of the afternoon in the 21st minute to give St. Olaf a 3-0 lead before the Cobbers got one goal back on a 27th-minute penalty kick by Telvin Vah, the MIAC's leading goal scorer this season.

The Oles got the goal back on Arcuch Puig's second of the game in the 35th minute to reclaim a three-goal lead at halftime. Bechtel and sophomore Victor Gaulmin assisted on Arcuch Puig's second goal, with Gaulmin's assist being his second of the half. St. Olaf scored on three of its six shots in the opening 45 minutes.

Morgan capped his big afternoon by scoring again in the 62nd minute, giving him 11 goals and eight assists this season after the two-goal, two-assist performance. The Costa Rican currently ranked second in the MIAC in goals, assists, and points this season.

Junior Max Eisenfeld closed out the scoring for the Oles with his second goal of the season in the 88th minute off an assist from first year Joe Deuitch before Concordia-Moorhead got a second goal 15 seconds later.

Sophomore Austin Williams picked up his 12th-straight victory in goal for St. Olaf, while Jensen Waltz suffered the loss for the hosts.

In their final home game of the regular season, the Oles host Augsburg on Tuesday, Oct. 26 at 3:30 p.m.
