NORTHFIELD, Minn. – The St. Olaf College women's soccer team kept its playoff hopes alive by getting goals from juniors Tessa Anderson and Lily Hanlon in a 2-1 victory over visiting Augsburg University on Wednesday afternoon at Rolf Mellby Field.
St. Olaf (6-9-1, 4-6-0 MIAC) entered the game needing to win its final two games and get some help to have a shot at securing a spot in the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) Playoffs and stayed alive thanks to Hanlon's 62nd-minute game-winner. The win was the first for the Oles over Augsburg (8-6-2, 5-4-1 MIAC) since a 4-0 home win on Sept. 29, 2010.
Anderson opened the scoring for St. Olaf in the 21st minute, running onto a through ball up the middle from senior Kate Oehm and curling a shot past Iz Shuster to give the Oles the lead. The goal was Anderson's team-leading seventh of the season and her first in conference play.
St. Olaf took the 1-0 lead into halftime before Augsburg tied the game at 1-1 just under 10 minutes into the second half. Jaelyn Nedelcoff scored the game-tying goal for the Auggies by firing the ball in under the cross bar from the top of the box after collecting a pass from Ana Ortiz.
The Oles reclaimed the lead less than seven minutes later when Hanlon curled a shot into the top-right corner after the ball broke to her on the right side of the box. The goal was Hanlon's second of the season and was the first game-winning goal of her career.
Augsburg had a chance to tie the game again when the Auggies were awarded a penalty kick in the 81st minute, but Jen Masello's shot hit the top of the cross bar and went out of play.
Senior Brynne Davis picked up the win with a six-save afternoon, while Shuster had seven saves in the game for Augsburg.
The win moved St. Olaf to within one point of Macalester, which currently occupies the sixth and final playoff spot. The Scots host Saint Mary's later on Wednesday night and a Macalester win would eliminate the Oles from playoff contention.
St. Olaf concludes its regular-season schedule on Saturday, Oct. 30 with a 1 p.m. kickoff at St. Kate's.
