Game Recap: Men's Hockey |

Darby scores in closing seconds in men's hockey's tie at Northland

ASHLAND, Wis. – Sophomore Brendan Darby scored his first collegiate goal in the closing seconds of the game to give the St. Olaf College men's hockey team a 1-1 tie in the finale of its weekend series at Northland College on Saturday at Bay Area Civic Center.

After neither team was able to score for the opening 53-plus minutes of the game, Northland (1-0-1) and St. Olaf (0-1-1) exchanged goals in the final six-plus minutes before settling for a tie. Cole Woodliffe broke the deadlock for the Lumberjacks at 13:29 of the third before Darby canceled it out with 4.1 seconds remaining.

St. Olaf had two power-play opportunities in the first period and three more in the second but was unable to convert on the man advantage as the game remained scoreless until Woodliffe opened the scoring at 13:29 of the third period.

The Oles pulled senior goaltender Cooper Lukenda for the extra attacker with 40 seconds remaining in regulation and the move paid off when Darby scored an extra-attacker goal in the waning seconds. After scoring on his collegiate debut the night before, first year Parker Casey assisted on Darby's game-tying goal.

St. Olaf was whistled for a holding penalty just 34 seconds into the extra session but Lukenda made two of his four saves in the overtime period with his team on the penalty kill to keep the game tied. Casey and sophomore Noah Heisler accounted for the Oles' two shots on goal in the overtime period.

Lukenda made 20 saves in the game for St. Olaf, which held a 38-21 advantage in shots on goal in the game. Chris Curr had 28 of his 37 saves in the second and third periods for Northland.

The Oles host UW-Eau Claire on Friday, Nov. 5 at 8 p.m. in the team's home opener at St. Olaf Ice Arena.
