Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Bechtel's double-OT winner gives No. 22 men's soccer win in Collegeville

COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. – First year Shea Bechtel scored the lone goal of the game in the 102nd minute to give the No. 22-ranked St. Olaf College men's soccer team a 1-0 double-overtime road victory over Saint John's University on Saturday afternoon at Haws Field.

Less than two minutes into the second extra session, Bechtel won it for St. Olaf (10-1-1, 5-0-0 MIAC) with his fifth sixth goal of the season – his fifth goal in the last four games – off an assist from sophomore Victor Gaulmin. Each of the Oles' last three meetings with Saint John's (5-5-1, 2-3-0 MIAC) have gone to double overtime with St. Olaf winning the last two.

Prior to Saturday, the last time St. Olaf won its first five Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) games of the season was 1999.

St. Olaf's eight-game winning streak is tied for the fifth-longest streak in recorded program history and is the program's longest since winning 15 in a row from Sept. 5 – Oct. 23, 1999. The Oles' nine-game unbeaten run (8-0-1) is also the fifth-longest in program history and the longest since the same 1999 team started 15-0-1.

After collecting a pass from Gaulmin, Bechtel beat Saint John's goalkeeper Evan Siefken with a right-footed shot inside the far post from the left side of the box 1:53 into the second overtime. The goal was Bechtel's third-game winning goal of the season, while Gaulmin picked up his fourth assist.

St. Olaf outshot Saint John's by a 20-6 margin in the game, including a 7-4 advantage in shots on goal. Sophomore Austin Williams collected his first complete shutout of the season with a four-save afternoon, while Siefken took the loss despite making six saves.

The Oles also held an 11-6 edge in corner kicks in the game but neither team was able to capitalize on a set piece.

Next up is a trip to Winona to face Saint Mary's University on Wednesday, Oct. 13 at 7 p.m.
