Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Oles return to Sweet 16 with 4-0 win over Loras

NORTHFIELD, Minn. – The No. 12-ranked St. Olaf College men's soccer team punched its ticket back to the third round/Sweet 16 of the NCAA Division III Men's Soccer Championship with a 4-0 victory over Loras College on Sunday afternoon at Rolf Mellby Field.

St. Olaf (19-2-1) got goals from sophomores Hakeem Morgan and Liam Vance in the first half and sophomores Casey McCloskey and Martin Machon in the second half to pick up its first-ever win over Loras (14-7-2) and earn a spot among the final 16 teams remaining in the country. The run to the third round matches the 2015 team for the deepest NCAA Tournament run in program history.

The win was the sixth NCAA Tournament victory in program history and the 4-0 margin of victory was the largest for St. Olaf in an NCAA Tournament game. With the win, the Oles will face North Park University in the sectional round at a site to be determined.

In its first-round win over North Central (Ill.) on Saturday, Loras held on after scoring a pair of goals in the first 15 minutes, and the Duhawks nearly opened the scoring again on Sunday. The first clear-cut scoring chance of the game fell to Loras' Kevin Kucaba in the 14th minute, but his curling right-footed shot from left of the penalty spot went over the goal.

St. Olaf opened the scoring through Morgan's 15th goal of the season in the 22nd minute, as the sophomore curled a left-footed shot from the right side that Loras goalkeeper Connor Fitzpatrick got a hand to but could not keep out. The goal was the second in as many days for Morgan, who has scored in each of the Oles' last four games. His 15 goals this season are tied for the second-highest single-season total in program history with Jens Undlin's tally from the 2014 season.

Less than 12 minutes later, Vance fired a left-footed shot into the lower-right corner of the net from inside the box after being picked out by first year Shea Bechtel. The goal was Vance's third of the season and gave St. Olaf a 2-0 lead at halftime.

The Oles quickly stretched their lead to 3-0 just over two minutes into the second half when McCloskey was on hand to tap in a rebound after Bechtel's shot from inside the six-yard box was blocked. McCloskey's goal was his ninth of the season and his second in as many days after he had a goal and two assists in Saturday's 3-0 win over Dominican (Ill.).

The score remained 3-0 until Machon netted his third goal of the season in the 86th minute to close out the four-goal win. Senior Kieran Mullen and junior Max Eisenfeld earned assists on the goal, which came after the Duhawks were down to 10 men due to a second yellow card in the 62nd minute.

The Oles held an 18-7 advantage in shots in the game, including a 6-2 margin in shots on goal, as sophomore Austin Williams had just two saves to make to pick up the victory.

More information on the location and timing of St. Olaf's third-round game against North Park will be posted when available.
