Game Recap: Men's Hockey |

Men's hockey tops Cobbers in shootout to complete five-point weekend

NORTHFIELD, Minn. – Sophomore Luke Suter scored twice in regulation and first years Ben Luscko and Jonathan Young scored in the shootout, as the St. Olaf College men's hockey team picked up the extra point following a 3-3 tie against Concordia-Moorhead on Saturday afternoon at St. Olaf Ice Arena.

Suter scored in the first and third periods to help St. Olaf (3-3-2, 2-1-1 MIAC) take three one-goal leads in regulation, but Concordia (4-3-2, 2-1-1 MIAC) responded each time to send the game to overtime. In the 3-on-3 extra session, the Oles killed off 3:09 of penalty time to extend the game to a shootout.

In the shootout, both teams scored their first attempt before being unsuccessful on their second attempts. Young proceeded to score St. Olaf's third attempt before senior Cooper Lukenda denied Concordia's Tyler Bossert to give the Oles the extra point in the standings.

Suter provided the first of St. Olaf's three one-goal leads by scoring the lone goal of the first period at the 6:22 mark. The sophomore gathered a loose puck inside his own blue line, skated into the offensive zone on the left, beat a defenseman at the top of the left circle, and beat goaltender Jackson Nelson on the glove side for his first collegiate goal.

In the second period, Henkemeyer-Howe tied the game at 1-1 at the 8:21 mark before the teams traded goals in the final three minutes of the period to go to the second intermission tied at 2-2. The Oles took their second lead of the afternoon with 2:24 to go in the period when first year Matthew Pointer scored on the backhand after being found in front by Luscko.

Pointer's goal was his second in as many days after he scored the game-winning goal in overtime in St. Olaf's 2-1 win the night before. The lead, however, did not last until the intermission after Cole O'Connell scored with 10 seconds to go in the period to knot the score at 2-2.

Suter got his second goal of the game at 7:48 of the third period to give the Oles their third lead of the game, tipping the puck past Nelson after first year Ethan Hersant threw the puck towards the net from the right boards. Concordia-Moorhead found yet another tying goal at the 13:17 mark of the third when Henkemeyer-Howe threw the puck towards the net and it found its way to Plante to one-time home.

St. Olaf generated three shots on goal on the power play later in the period, but Nelson was equal to the task each time. The Oles were whistled for a tripping penalty with 51.7 seconds remaining in regulation, but managed to kill off the penalty that carried over into 1:09 of a 4-on-3 advantage for the Cobbers to start overtime.

Ten seconds after Nelson denied first year Tyler Cooper on a breakaway, St. Olaf committed another tripping penalty to bring up another 4-on-3 power play for Concordia. The Cobbers were again unable to convert as Lukenda made two saves to help send the game to the shootout, which the Oles won thanks to goals from Luscko and Pointer and the save by Lukenda on Bossert.

Lukenda finished one save shy of his career high with a 39-save performance, making 28 saves in the second and third periods. Nelson recorded 24 saves for Concordia, which held a 42-27 advantage in shots on goal in the game.

St. Olaf takes a break from Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) play by visiting Marian University for a non-conference series in Fond du Lac, Wis. on Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 27-28. Puck drop is slated for 7 p.m. in the series opener.
