Carleton halts men's soccer's winning streak in MIAC title game

NORTHFIELD, Minn. – The top-seeded and No. 12-ranked St. Olaf College men's soccer team was defeated, 2-1, by crosstown-rival and second-seeded Carleton College in the championship game of the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) Playoffs on Saturday afternoon at Rolf Mellby Field.

Carleton (13-3-2) got goals from Marco da Cunha and Trevor Jones on its way to claiming its fourth MIAC Playoffs title and the conference's automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament, which starts next week. Trailing 2-0, St. Olaf (17-2-1) got a late consolation goal from sophomore Hakeem Morgan in the closing seconds but saw its program-record-tying 15-game winning streak come to an end.

The Oles were appearing in their first MIAC Playoffs title game since winning the second of the program's two tournament titles in 2015. St. Olaf will find out if it has earned an at-large bid into the NCAA Tournament on Monday's selection show that will air on NCAA.com at 12:30 p.m. CDT.

The Knights opened the scoring in the 31st minute on a goal by Marco da Cunha, who nodded in a left-wing cross from Tarek Bos-Shadi at the far post. Bos-Shadi was again the provider for Carleton's second goal, finding Jones in the box before Jones' shot from inside the penalty spot trickled over the line via a deflection in the 52nd minute.

Trailing by two goals, St. Olaf generated 13 shots in the second half but could not find a goal until Morgan fired a right-footed shot from near the edge of the box past Alexei Thomas with under three seconds remaining. The goal was Morgan's team-leading 13th of the season, which is tied for the fifth-highest total in program history and the most by an Ole since 2015.

The Oles outshot the Knights by a 21-11 margin in the game, although the differential in shots on goal was just 6-4 in favor of St. Olaf. Thomas earned the victory with a five-save afternoon, while sophomore Austin Williams had two saves for the Oles.
