Game Recap: Women's Hockey |

Big second period spurs women's hockey to sweep of Lumberjills

ASHLAND, Wis. – The St. Olaf College women's hockey team scored four unanswered goals in the second period on its way to finishing off its third sweep of the season with a 4-3 victory over Northland College on Saturday afternoon at Bay Area Civic Center.

Junior Annika Patterson scored the final two of the four second-period goals for St. Olaf (7-6-0), which trailed 2-0 after one period. First year Sophie McBane and senior Carolyn Carpenter lit the lamp 46 seconds apart inside the first five minutes of the period to ignite the come-from-behind victory over Northland (1-11-1).

The Oles outshot the Lumberjills by a 19-6 margin in the opening period but conceded twice in the final 3:30 to dig themselves a 2-0 deficit after 20 minutes. First years Heather Sager and McBane connected on a power-play goal 3:54 into the second period for McBane's second goal of the weekend to make it a 2-1 game.

Just 46 seconds later, Carpenter tallied her second goal of the season off assists from first year Iona Welsch and sophomore Mia Jutz to tie it up. Inside the final three minutes of the period, Patterson netted her seventh and eighth goals of the season just 11 second apart, with McBane earning an assist on the go-ahead goal.

Karadyn Kiviaho registered the lone goal of the third period with just two seconds remaining for Northland. Senior Ivy Shonka evened her record at 3-3-0 on the season with a 20-save afternoon between the pipes for the Oles, while Soleil Archambeault had 51 saves a day after making 42 stops for the Lumberjills.

St. Olaf's 55 shots on goal were its highest single-game total since also having 55 in a 4-1 victory over Finlandia on Jan. 8, 2016.

The Oles are off until 2022 before starting the year with a series against Gustavus. The series opener is slated for a 7 p.m. start at St. Olaf Ice Arena on Friday, Jan. 14.
