Nationally-ranked Gusties blank women's hockey

NORTHFIELD, Minn. – Brooke Power scored a hat trick to lead sixth-ranked Gustavus Adolphus College to a 7-0 win over the St. Olaf College women's hockey team in Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) play on Friday night at St. Olaf Ice Arena.

Power scored once in each period to lead the way for Gustavus (9-2-0, 5-0-0 MIAC), which led just 2-0 inside the final two minutes of the second period. The Gusties scored five times over the final 21:37 of the game to pick up their 12th-straight win in the series with St. Olaf (7-7-0, 1-6-0 MIAC).

Power opened the scoring at 15:22 of the first period before doubling her team's lead at 3:17 of the second period. The score remained 2-0 until Emily Olson extended the Gustavus lead to 3-0 with 1:37 to go in the third period.

The Gusties got goals less than two minutes apart from Jordyn Peterson and Sophia Coltvet inside the first five minutes of the third period to push their lead to 5-0. Junior Maddie Anderson had the best chance of the game for St. Olaf on a breakaway just shy of the midway point of the third period, but Maria Widen denied Anderson her third goal of the season.

Kaitlyn Holland scored unassisted at 14:30 of the third period before Power completed her hat trick from Olson 21 seconds later. The Gusties outshot the Oles by a 51-4 margin in the game.

Senior Iva Shonka made 33 saves over the first 44:29 of the game for St. Olaf before giving way to junior Taylor Smith, who stopped 11-of-13 shots over the final 15:31. Katie McCoy earned the win with three saves over the first 30:02 of the game for Gustavus, while Widen's lone save of the game was on Anderson's breakaway.

The Gusties and Oles complete their series on Saturday, Jan. 15 at 2 p.m. in St. Peter.
