NORTHFIELD, Minn. – Head coach
Travis Wall announced the promotion of assistant coach
Justin Oliver to associate head coach for the St. Olaf College men's soccer program on Monday.
Oliver has spent the last three seasons as an assistant coach at St. Olaf, helping Wall rebuild the program since being hired in January 2019. After joining Wall's staff, Oliver has helped transform a program that went 5-13 overall and 2-8 in the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) into one that went 19-3-1 overall and 10-0-0 in conference play on its way to winning a regular-season conference championship and appearing in the Sweet 16 this fall.
"The St. Olaf men's soccer program has been extremely fortunate to have Justin's guidance over the last three years," Wall said. "He was with me on my first day on the job in January 2019 and has been instrumental in the progress we have made. There is no task too big or small for Justin – from helping with training design, to recruiting, to ordering meals, to film – you name it, he's done it. This is a well-earned title for him that is reflective of the work he has put in on a regular basis over the last three years and it gives me a lot of joy because this wasn't given to him, he earned it. We are excited to keep trying to move St. Olaf men's soccer in the right direction."
This fall, Oliver helped St. Olaf set a new program record with 19 victories as the Oles claimed their seventh MIAC regular-season title by becoming the fifth team to go 10-0-0 in conference play. After earning an at-large berth into the NCAA Tournament, St. Olaf posted shutout wins over Dominican (Ill.) and Loras to advance to the Sweet 16 for the second time in program history before falling, 1-0, to North Park. The run to the Sweet 16 matched the deepest NCAA Tournament run in program history.
Along with Wall and assistant coach
Ben Braman, Oliver was part of the St. Olaf coaching staff that was named the 2021 NCAA Division III Region IX Coaching Staff of the Year after guiding the Oles to arguably the most successful season in program history. The program produced two All-Americans, four United Soccer Coaches All-Region selections, and six All-MIAC honorees this season, plus two additional All-MIAC selections and three Honorable Mention All-MIAC honorees in 2019.
Oliver joined Wall's staff after serving as the head coach at North St. Paul High School in 2018, leading the team to a 14-4-0 record. He also coached at St. Croix Academy from 2015-19. During his playing days, Oliver spent three years at NCAA Division I Eastern Illinois University before transferring to the University of St. Thomas, where he scored 16 goals and added five assists in 23 games to earn United Soccer Coaches Second Team All-American honors in his one season as a Tommie.
The former North St. Paul High School standout ranks third all-time in Minnesota with 154 career points on 92 goals (fifth all-time) and 62 assists (sixth all-time) during his high school career. He was a two-time all-region and all-state selection and was named Minnesota's Mr. Soccer and Gatorade Player of the Year, as well as an NSCAA All-American, as his teams went a combined 66-9-3.
