ST. JOSEPH, Minn. – The St. Olaf College women's tennis team clinched a spot in the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) Playoffs with a 6-3 victory over the College of Saint Benedict on Saturday afternoon at CSB Courts.
The win over Saint Ben's (3-8, 1-7 MIAC) meant that St. Olaf (3-4, 3-4 MIAC) can finish no worse than sixth in the conference standings. Even if the Oles drop their remaining two MIAC matches, St. Olaf and Saint Mary's would be tied with 3-6 conference records, but the Oles would earn the No. 6 seed thanks to a head-to-head victory over the Cardinals. St. Olaf could still finish as high as fifth.
The playoff berth will be the 12th in program history and the second in a row for the Oles, who qualified in 2019 before the 2020 edition of the tournament was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
In doubles, Barboza and
Allie Prokosch improved to 4-3 on the season with an 8-4 victory at the top spot, while Otteson and
Greta Prokosch ran their record to 5-2 with an 8-6 win at the second spot. Saint Ben's claimed the No. 3 doubles match in a tiebreaker to claim a point heading into singles.
Otteson and
Greta Prokosch both moved to 5-2 this spring in singles with their straight-set victories at No. 3 and No. 4 singles, respectively, while Barboza picked up a 6-3, 6-2 win at No. 1 singles.
Christiana Cholakis claimed her second victory of the spring by rallying for a 3-6, 6-2, 10-8 victory at No. 5 singles.
St. Olaf visits Macalester on Tuesday, April 27 for a 5 p.m. match.
