Box Score ST. LOUIS PARK, Minn. – The St. Olaf College men's tennis team snapped the University of Northwestern's 12-match winning streak to start the season with a 7-2 victory over the Eagles on Thursday evening at Life Time St. Louis Park.
In addition to snapping the lengthy winning streak for Northwestern (12-1), the win was the third in a row for St. Olaf (4-2). The Oles won close matches at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles as part of a doubles sweep and claimed four of the six singles matches.
Ethan Bruha and
Tony Klagge put the first point on the board with an 8-4 victory at No. 3 doubles. First-time pairing
Spencer Wick and
Michael Yousef edged their opposition at No. 1 doubles in a tiebreaker. In their first match as partners this year,
Tim Roback and
Dez Young completed the doubles sweep with an 8-6 victory at No. 2 doubles.
In singles, Bruha, Klagge, and Yousef each recorded their third consecutive victories, while Roback earned a win in his first singles action of the season. Yousef posted a 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 2 singles to give the Oles their fourth point and a 4-2 lead before Roback wrapped up the team win with a 6-3, 7-5 win at No. 6 singles.
Klagge took the first set of his match at No. 5 singles in a tiebreaker and went on to pick up a 7-6 (7-1), 6-3 win. In the last match on court, Bruha rallied from a set down to grab a 5-7, 6-3, 1-0 (10-5) victory.
St. Olaf opens Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) play at home against crosstown rival Carleton College on Wednesday, April 14 at 4:30 p.m.
