Newby's goal and assist lift women's soccer past Macalester

NORTHFIELD, Minn. – Senior Anna Newby had the game-winning goal and an assist to lead the St. Olaf College women's soccer team to a 2-1 victory over regionally-ranked Macalester College on Saturday afternoon at Rolf Mellby Field.

Newby opened the scoring in the 32nd minute with her first goal of the season and added an assist on classmate Hayley Hoffmann's goal in the 72nd minute to help St. Olaf (4-3-1, 2-1-0 MIAC) grab a 2-0 lead. Macalester (4-2-1, 1-2-0 MIAC), which was ranked No. 5 in this week's United Soccer Coaches regional poll, got a goal from Ella Thomsen with just under six minutes remaining.

The Oles outshot the Scots by a 17-1 margin in the opening half but carried just a 1-0 lead into the half as Newby grabbed the only goal of the half. First year Faith Yi created the goal, driving toward the top of the box before sliding the ball to the left to Newby, who curled a right-footed one-timer into the top-right corner for her second collegiate goal.

St. Olaf held onto the slender one-goal lead until Hoffmann doubled the Oles' lead inside the final 20 minutes by getting on the end of a cross from the left by Newby to turn the ball in in front of the goal. Hoffmann's goal was her second of the season and the fifth of her career.

Down by two, Macalester halved its deficit in the 85th minute when Thomsen headed in a rebound after Lorenzen fired a free kick off of the crossbar, but that was the final shot of the game for the Scots.

Senior Brynne Davis earned the win for St. Olaf with a three-save afternoon, while Dana Gustafson had 12 saves in the loss for Macalester. The Oles held a commanding 28-4 advantage in shots in the game, including a 14-4 margin in shots on goal.
