STEVENS POINT, Wis. – Senior
Lucia Ranallo scored the second goal of her career inside the final minute of double overtime to give the St. Olaf College women's soccer team a 2-1 victory over UW-Stevens Point on Saturday afternoon at Point Soccer Bowl.
With just 51 seconds remaining in the second overtime, Ranallo was on hand at the back post to fire home a rebound for the winning goal for St. Olaf (1-0-1), which claimed its first victory over UW-Stevens Point (0-2-0) since a 4-1 road win on Oct. 22, 2011. The Pointers were 3-0-1 in the last four meetings in the series.
Ranallo's decisive goal came after senior
Kate Oehm drove towards the goal from the right side and fired a shot that UWSP goalkeeper Brookelyn Heiss tipped onto the crossbar before the rebound fell to Ranallo.
Ranallo also played a hand in the opening goal for the Oles, as she set up classmate
Hayley Hoffmann to start the scoring in the 27th minute. St. Olaf generated three shots on goal in the final seven minutes of the half, but Miranda Nieman stopped all three to keep it a 1-0 game at the break.
Less than three minutes into the second half, the Pointers tied the game on a goal by Shea-Lynn Gerred off an assist from Kati Frierdich and the score remained locked at 1-1 until Ranallo's late winner.
St. Olaf took five of the game's seven shots in the two overtime periods and held advantages of 19-14 in shots and 9-5 in shots on goal in the game. Senior
Brynne Davis picked up the victory with four saves for the Oles, while Heiss and Nieman combined for seven saves for the Pointers.
Next up for St. Olaf is a trip to Waverly, Iowa to face Wartburg on Tuesday, Sept. 7 at 5 p.m.
