Fix and first years lead women's basketball to win at St. Scholastica

DULUTH, Minn. – Junior Cassie Fix scored a career-high 19 points and the St. Olaf College women's basketball team never trailed in a 67-55 victory at the College of St. Scholastica on Wednesday night at Reif Gym.

Fix was 8-for-13 from the field on her way to the 19-point night while adding four rebounds, six steals, two assists, and one block for St. Olaf (4-8, 3-6 MIAC), which snapped a six-game losing streak with the win. St. Scholastica (0-12, 0-10 MIAC) had four scorers in double figures in the first meeting between the two schools as Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) foes.

First year Sarah Tangen was in double figures for the third time in the last four games with a career-high 17 points and six rebounds, while first year Sophia Kormann logged her first double-double of the season with 11 points and 11 rebounds. The Oles outrebounded the Saints by a 52-27 margin on the night and turned that into a 24-4 advantage in second-chance points.

Fix and senior K'Lynn Lewis combined to score all 12 points for St. Olaf in a 12-2 start over the game's first three minutes, leading to an early timeout by the hosts. Despite being held scoreless over the final 4:17 of the quarter, the Oles took a 20-12 lead into the second quarter thanks to eight early points from Fix and a pair of early three-pointers by Lewis.

Tangen hit a pair of three-pointers as part of an eight-point second quarter for the first year as the Oles took a 32-26 lead at the break. The Saints got within four, 22-18, midway through the quarter before St. Olaf pushed its lead back to 10 on a Tangen three-pointer with 1:32 to go. A three-pointer by Karli Nixon in the closing seconds cut the Oles' lead to six at the half.

St. Olaf led by at least five for the duration of the third quarter and extended its lead to 11, 48-37, on Tangen's third three-pointer of the game. St. Scholastica shot 50.0 percent (5-for-10) from the field in the third quarter, but the Oles outrebounded the Saints by a 16-5 margin and got 11 second-chance points in the quarter to carry a 50-42 lead into the fourth.

Kormann scored the first five points of the fourth quarter to push the Oles' lead to 55-42 with 7:18 remaining and St. Olaf led by as many as 16 with 5:10 to go after two free throws by Tangen. St. Scholastica went on a 10-1 run over the next 2:23 to make it a 61-54 game with 2:47 to go but only scored one point over the remainder of the game.

Miranda Broberg had a team-high 18 points on 5-for-18 shooting, including 3-for-11 from behind the arc, for the Saints. Liz Frase added 12 points and seven rebounds off the bench for St. Scholastica, while Megan Hurley and Nixon had 11 points apiece.
