Women's basketball can't overcome early deficit against Carleton

NORTHFIELD, Minn. – Junior Grace Hegland notched her first collegiate double-double, but the St. Olaf College women's basketball team could not overcome an early double-digit-point deficit in a 65-52 loss to crosstown-rival Carleton College on Saturday afternoon at Skoglund Center.

Hegland came off the bench to provide 11 points and 13 rebounds for St. Olaf (4-10, 3-8 MIAC), which could not overcome a 10-0 start to the game for Carleton (5-9, 4-7 MIAC). The Knights held the Oles to 31.1 percent shooting from the field and 1-for-19 (5.3 percent) shooting from behind the arc in the game.

With the Carleton win, the President's Cup will be on the line when the teams meet at West Gym on Saturday, Feb. 12. St. Olaf currently holds the traveling trophy that the two schools contest after sweeping the two meetings during the 2018-19 season.

Senior K'Lynn Lewis was the only other Ole in double figures, going 6-for-6 from the free-throw line on a 12-point afternoon. Lewis also had four assists and three steals in the loss. St. Olaf shot over 40.0 percent from the field in the second and third quarters but hit at a 20.0 percent clip or lower in the first and fourth quarters.

Carleton started the game on a 10-0 run and took a 36-22 lead into the locker room in a first half where the Knights never trailed. The visitors scored 26 of their 36 points in the paint, while the Oles had 18 of their 22 points from in close.

A driving layup by Olmen with 4:19 to go in the half ended Carleton's 10-0 start to the game, but the Knights led 17-4 inside the final minute of the quarter and took an 11-point lead into the second. Carleton limited St. Olaf to 3-for-15 shooting in the opening 10 minutes.

The Oles heated up to 7-for-17 shooting (41.2 percent) in the second quarter and trimmed the Knight's lead to 29-22 with 2:26 to go until the half on a layup by sophomore Cayden Botten. Carleton's Jasmine Choi scored the final six points of the half to cap her 12-point first half and give the Knights their largest lead of the half at 36-22 at the break.

Carleton continued to lead by double figures until St. Olaf went on a 10-2 run over a four-minute stretch of the third quarter to get with four, 42-38, with 3:49 to go in the quarter. Three-straight buckets by Hegland, Cassie Fix, and Olmen started the run, which was capped by four consecutive free throws by Lewis.

The Knights carried a 50-43 lead into the fourth quarter, but the Oles quickly made it a one-possession game by starting the quarter on a 6-2 spurt. In a 52-49 game with 7:45 to go, Carleton held St. Olaf scoreless for over five minutes as part of a decisive 11-0 run that put the game out of reach.

The Oles visit Macalester on Wednesday, Jan. 19 for a 7 p.m. tip-off in St. Paul.
