RIVER FALLS, Wis. – First year
Sean Walsh had two goals and an assist as the St. Olaf College men's hockey team picked up its first road victory of the season with a 4-2 win over UW-River Falls on Friday evening at Hunt Arena.
Walsh tallied the game-tying and go-ahead goals on the power play early in the second and third periods for St. Olaf (5-7-3), which picked up its first win over UW-River Falls (9-6-1) since Nov. 7, 2008. The Falcons received votes in this week's national rankings, picking up five votes in the DCU/USCHO Division III Men's Poll.
Walsh's three-point night was the first of his collegiate career, as was his two-goal performance. First years
Ben Luscko and
Parker Casey assisted on both of Walsh's goals, while junior
Ashton Altmann and first year
Tyler Cooper also lit the lamp for the Oles.
Altmann got the scoring started for St. Olaf midway through the first period, firing a shot in under the bar after Walsh found him on the edge of the right circle from behind the net. The goal was Altmann's fourth of the season and his second in the last three games.
UW-River Falls took a 2-1 lead into the first intermission on goals from Gibb Coady and Noah Roofe just over five minutes apart later in the period. Gibb tied the game at 1-1 just 1:29 after Altmann's goal before Roofe gave the Falcons the lead at the 16:03 mark.
Walsh grabbed the game-tying goal on the power play just 1:37 into the second period after UW-River Falls was whistled for a tripping penalty less than a minute into the period. Casey and Luscko picked up assists on the goal, as the pair got the puck to Walsh on a sharp angle on the left and the first year squeezed the puck home from near the goal line.
The score remained tied until Walsh netted the eventual game-winning goal on the power play at 4:01 of the third period, slotting the puck home in front off assists from Casey and Luscko again. Midway through the third, Cooper scored his team-leading 10th goal of the season – his eighth in the last five games – from first year
Jonathan Young to give the Oles an insurance goal.
Sophomore
Lukas Haugen earned his second-career victory with a 30-save performance in net for St. Olaf, while Dysen Skinner had 22 stops in the loss for UW-River Falls. The Oles cashed in on two of their three power plays and killed off all three of their minor penalties.
St. Olaf returns to Wisconsin to face UW-Stout on Saturday, Jan. 15 at 7 p.m.
