NORTHFIELD, Minn. – The regionally-ranked St. Olaf College men's soccer team saw its 14-game Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) regular-season winning streak come to an end with a 2-1 loss to crosstown-rival Carleton College on Saturday afternoon at Bell Field.
Blake Jones scored once in each half to give Carleton (4-4-2, 2-2-0 MIAC) a 2-1 lead, including an insurance goal in the 81st minute to double the Knights' lead. Jones' second goal proved vital, as junior Zach Harvey-Latham scored inside the final minute to give St. Olaf (6-4-0, 4-1-0 MIAC) hope of a late rally, but there was not enough time remaining to find a second goal.
The loss was the Oles' first in a regular-season conference contest since a 1-0 double-overtime loss to Concordia-Moorhead in the final game of the 2019 regular season on Nov. 2. St. Olaf's 14-game MIAC regular-season winning streak was the longest in the conference since Gustavus Adolphus College won 17 in a row across three seasons from 2012-14.
Carleton opened the scoring in the 34th minute when Jones picked out the top corner seconds after a corner kick for his first of two goals in the game. The goal came just over nine minutes after St. Olaf was reduced to 10 men with a straight red card. The Oles had outshot the Knights by a 4-1 margin prior to the dismissal.
Despite being down a man, St. Olaf stayed in the game, trailing by the 1-0 margin in the 70th minute when Carleton received a second yellow card to put both teams down a man for the final 20 minutes. Ten minutes later, the Knights doubled their lead on Jones' second goal of the game, as he fired the ball into the lower-left corner not long after another Carleton corner.
Daniel Linder preserved the two-goal advantage for the hosts by saving a penalty kick by sophomore
Shea Bechtel in the 87th minute. The Oles finally got on the board with 58 seconds remaining when Harvey-Latham blasted the ball into the top-right corner off a cutback from classmate
Casey McCloskey.
McCloskey has a goal or an assist in each of the last three games for St. Olaf. Junior
Ian Elliott also earned his first assist of the season on the goal. Trailing by one, the Oles created one final chance in the final seconds of the game, but Harvey-Latham's one-timer from distance flew wide.
Despite played a man down for more than half the game, St. Olaf outshot Carleton by an 18-12 margin, although shots on goal were 6-5 in favor of the Knights. Junior
Austin Williams took the loss with four saves for the Oles, while Linder picked up his second win with four saves of his own.
St. Olaf hosts UW-Eau Claire on Thursday, Oct. 6 at 4 p.m. at Rolf Mellby Field. The Blugolds are currently 13-0-0 and ranked No. 24 in the country by United Soccer Coaches.
