Aldentaler's first-career goal helps Oles secure home playoff game

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – The St. Olaf College women's soccer team secured at least one home playoff game by recording its fifth-straight shutout to pick up a 1-0 road victory over Augsburg University on Tuesday evening at Edor Nelson Field.

First year Maylee Aldentaler netted her first collegiate goal late in the first half for St. Olaf (9-5-1, 7-2-1 MIAC) and the Oles' defense took care of the rest by holding Augsburg (6-9-2, 3-5-2 MIAC) off the board. St. Olaf entered the night needing at least one point to earn its third-ever home playoff game.

The victory was the fifth in a row for head coach Becky Maines' team and the team's seventh conference win of the season, matching the highest total in the history of the program. The win was also St. Olaf's first at Augsburg since 2009 and its second in the last 11 meetings in Minneapolis dating back to 1999.

With one game remaining in the regular season, St. Olaf is third in the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) standings on 22 points, two behind the College of Saint Benedict and two ahead of St. Catherine University. Depending on the results on Saturday, the Oles will be seeded either No. 2, No. 3, or No. 4 in the upcoming MIAC Playoffs.

The Auggies generated a pair of scoring chances inside the first minute of the game, as Megan Hensel sent a lofted effort just wide in the first 30 seconds before firing the ball over the net from six yards out moments later. The Oles also created an early chance in the fourth minute, as first year Cat Duffy-Shaw's shot from outside the box drew a corner from Augsburg goalkeeper Iz Shuster.

Half an hour in, Shuster made a save to deny senior Tessa Anderson after Anderson got in behind the Auggies' back line on a long ball over the top. St. Olaf made the breakthrough shortly after its sixth corner kick of the opening half, as senior Mae Guetschow sent the ball back into the box from the right and Aldentaler connected on a one-timer in the middle of the box for her first-career goal in the 42nd minute. Guetschow's assist was the first of her collegiate career.

Junior Maddie Black made all seven of her saves in the game in the second half to help St. Olaf hang on for the one-goal win. The clean sheet was Black's fourth in her last five starts and extended her scoreless streak in goal to 479:44 dating back to Oct. 1.

St. Olaf had eight shots in each half to finish with a slender 16-15 advantage in shots for the game, which saw both teams muster seven shots on goal. Shuster suffered the loss despite making six saves for the Auggies.

The Oles conclude the regular season on their home turf at Rolf Mellby Field against St. Catherine University on Saturday, Oct. 29 at 1 p.m.
