NORTHFIELD, Minn. – The St. Olaf College men's hockey team scored multiple goals in each period and got goals from seven skaters in a 7-1 victory over Northland College in its season opener on Friday night at St. Olaf Ice Arena.
St. Olaf (1-0-0) scored twice in each of the first two periods to build a 4-1 lead over Northland (0-1-0) and tacked on three goals in the final period to pick up just its second win in a season opener since 2010-11. First year
Kelijah McElroy had a game-high three points in his collegiate debut for the Oles, who got points from 12 different skaters in the win.

With the game still scoreless, Cooper broke the deadlock at 15:31 of the opening period with a power-play goal, blasting a one-timer in from the top of the left circle off assists from Shoemaker and Darby. A little over three minutes later, Brown doubled St. Olaf's lead at the first intermission by steering the puck home on the backhand in front after being set up by McElroy and Sherman.
Salz netted his first-career goal at 3:45 of the second period to extend the Oles' lead to 3-0, a lead St. Olaf maintained until Walsh made it a four-goal advantage at the 17:49 mark by finishing off a rebound off a Bowditch shot late in the period. Northland got its lone goal of the game from Josh King on the power play at 18:28 to make it a 4-1 game at the second intermission.
Bowditch, Young, and Light accounted for St. Olaf's three third-period goals, while McElroy completed his three-point night with assists on the final two goals of the game. The Oles outshot the LumberJacks by a 48-17 margin in the game and got 16 saves from junior
Lukas Haugen in the victory.
St. Olaf returns to the ice on Friday, Nov. 4 in its Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) opener at home against Bethel University at 8 p.m.
