Oles claim No. 2 seed in MIAC Playoffs with four-set win over Knights

NORTHFIELD, Minn. – The St. Olaf College volleyball team secured the No. 2 seed for next week's Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) Playoffs by downing crosstown-rival Carleton College in four sets on Saturday evening at West Gym.

Junior Catherine Moore led four student-athletes in double figures in kills with a match-high 20 for St. Olaf (15-12, 8-3 MIAC), which hit .317 in the match to pick up its fourth-straight win over Carleton (5-17, 1-10 MIAC). The win locked up the No. 2 seed and a bye into the semifinals of the MIAC Playoffs, where the Oles will meet the winner of the quarterfinal between No. 6 seed Augsburg University and No. 3 seed St. Catherine University on Thursday, Nov. at 7 p.m. at Skoglund Center.

Entering the night, St. Olaf had already clinched its fifth-straight and 15th overall appearance in the MIAC Playoffs. The Oles will be a top-two seed in the tournament for the fourth time in program history (2001, 2002, 2010, 2019) as they go in search of their fourth MIAC Playoffs title (2000, 2002, 2010).

Moore surpassed 20 kills in a match for the third time in her career and did so on just 32 swings to hit .531 for St. Olaf, while sophomore Maycie Rogers blew past her previous career high of 12 kills with a career-best 17 while hitting .448. Fifth-year senior Katelyn Lannom and junior Anysia Caille added 10 kills apiece.

First year Paige Christophersen handed out 37 assists to go with 10 digs and four aces, while first year Tatum Sims contributed 15 digs and four aces. Senior Selena Rodriguez notched her 14th match this season with at least 20 digs with a match-high 29.

Rogers had eight kills on 10 errorless swings in the first set to help St. Olaf to a 25-23 set win to start the match. The Oles led 10-4 early before the Knights won nine-straight points to take a 13-10 advantage. St. Olaf responded with a 9-2 run to take the lead back at 19-15, only for Carleton to win four points in a row late in the set to even it at 23-23. A block by Caille and senior Nicole Banitt broke the tie and brought up set point, which the Oles converted on a kill by Caille.

St. Olaf hit a blistering .519 in the second set to cruise to a two-sets-to-none lead, opening the set on a 6-1 run and never yielding the lead. Up by three at 14-11, the Oles broke open the set with a 7-0 run that included three of Moore's seven kills in the set.

Carleton held St. Olaf to a .128 attack percentage in the third set to stay alive and get the match to a fourth set. The Oles raced out to an 8-2 lead, but the Knights gradually fought back to eventually take an 18-16 lead. St. Olaf answered with a 4-1 run to go up 20-19, only for Carleton to win the next five points to bring up four set points, which the Knights needed all of before winning the set on an attack error.

Lannom and Moore combined for 11 of St. Olaf's 16 kills in the fourth set to help the Oles finish off the victory. The duo each had three kills in a 10-1 start to the set for St. Olaf, which survived runs of 4-0 and 5-0 for Carleton in the set to close out the win in four. Rodriguez had nine digs in the fourth set to help limit the Knights to a .171 attack percentage.
