Women's hockey loses series finale in Stevens Point

STEVENS POINT, Wis. – Despite holding a 49-19 advantage in shots on goal, the St. Olaf College women's hockey team was on the wrong end of a 4-1 score against UW-Stevens Point on Saturday afternoon at K.B. Willett Arena.

Coming off a 2-1 win the night before, St. Olaf (1-1-0) more than doubled up UW-Stevens Point (1-1-0) in shots on goal but yielded two goals in each of the first two periods. Senior Annika Patterson scored the lone goal of the game for the Oles on the power play in the final minute.

The Pointers capitalized on both penalties as part of a 5-on-3 power play in the opening period to take a 2-0 lead into the first intermission despite being outshot by a 19-6 margin. Natalie Ahern opened the scoring at the 11:00 mark before Courtney Leising doubled UWSP's lead just 29 seconds later.

Ahern struck again just 37 seconds into the second period before Sara Aadalen made it 4-0 at the 11:31 mark to five the Pointers a four-goal lead at the second intermission. Patterson scored on a 6-on-4 power play with just over 42 seconds remaining to get the Oles on the board.

First year Hannah Fritz suffered the loss in her first collegiate start after stopping 6-of-10 shots over the opening 31:31 of the game. Sophomore Devon Cole saved all nine shots she faced over the final 23:57. Olivia Schultz stopped 48 of St. Olaf's 49 shots in the game to earn the win for the hosts.

The Oles host Northland College in a non-conference series next weekend, starting with a 4 p.m. puck drop on Friday, Nov. 4 at St. Olaf Ice Arena.
