NORTHFIELD, Minn. – The St. Olaf College football team suffered a 26-7 loss to crosstown-rival Carleton College in the annual battle for the Goat Trophy on Saturday afternoon Laird Stadium.
Carleton (5-0, 3-0 MIAC) remained undefeated this season by outrushing St. Olaf (3-2, 2-1 MIAC) by a 295-64 margin to reclaim the Goat for the first time since 2013. The Oles had won the last seven meetings between the crosstown rivals and have won 10 of the last 12 games in the series.
After the teams traded touchdowns 1:19 apart late in the first quarter and early in the second, Carleton held St. Olaf scoreless for the final 43:57 of the game. The Knights controlled the ball for 36:56 in the game and outgained the Oles by a 452-242 margin after running 96 plays from scrimmage.
Senior
Payton Schott scored St. Olaf's lone touchdown of the afternoon, hauling in a 40-yard pass from sophomore
Theo Doran 1:03 into the second quarter for Schott's fifth touchdown in the last four games. Doran and Schott have connected for at least one touchdown in four-straight games.
Schott had four reception for 84 yards in the loss, making him the leading receiver in the game. Doran was 11-for-30 for 178 yards with one touchdown and two interceptions, while sophomore
Christian Graske carried the ball 24 times for 76 yards.
Junior
Jacob Halek had a game-high 11 tackles, including nine solo stops, and had an interception for the fifth consecutive game for the Oles. His five-game interception streak is the longest by an Ole since at least 1991. Classmate

After a scoreless opening 14-plus minutes, Carleton opened the scoring with 16 seconds to go in the first quarter on a five-yard touchdown from Jonathan Singleton to Ntense Obono on a fourth-and-goal play. Sophomore
Devin McNearny set up St. Olaf with good field position by returning the ensuing kickoff 34 yards to the 41-yard line.
The Oles capitalized on the good field position five plays later when Doran found Schott over the top for a 40-yard touchdown to tie the game at 7-7 early in the second quarter. Josh Prom broke up passes on second and third down goal-to-go plays.
Carleton extended its lead to 19-7 by scoring all of the third quarter's nine points, getting another short field goal by Ramirez and a five-yard run by Singleton to take a two-score lead. St. Olaf threatened to cut into the deficit right away in the fourth quarter but came up empty on four-straight pass plays from the 15-yard line.
The Knights capitalized on their second interception of the fourth quarter on a 16-yard pass from Singleton to Obono – their second scoring connection of the game – with 6:27 left to put the game out of reach. Singleton ran 19 times for 130 yards and a touchdown while completing 17-of-34 passes for 157 yards with two touchdowns and one interception. Aiden Chang also eclipsed the century mark for Carleton, rushing 23 times for 115 yards.
St. Olaf hosts nationally-ranked Saint John's University on Saturday, Oct. 15 at 1 p.m. at Klein Field at Manitou.
