Women's hockey finishes off sweep of Bethel

BLAINE, Minn. – First year Molly Terebayza scored twice in the span of less than two minutes midway through the second period to propel the St. Olaf College women's team to a 4-3 road victory over Bethel University to complete a weekend sweep on Saturday at Bethel University Arena.

With the teams locked at 2-2 in the second period, Terebayza scored the go-ahead goal at 11:09 and the eventual game-winning goal at 12:49 for St. Olaf (4-1-1, 2-0-0 MIAC). The sweep of Bethel (1-3-0, 0-2-0 MIAC) was the Oles' first sweep of a Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) opponent since 4-3 and 4-1 victories over St. Catherine University on Jan. 27-28, 2017.

Goals from senior Chloe LaFond and sophomore Iona Welsch gave the Oles a 2-0 lead after the first intermission before the Royals rallied with back-to-back goals in the middle period to tie the game. With St. Olaf's two-goal lead gone, Terebayza scored just 12 seconds after Bethel tied the game and again 1:40 later to give the Oles a lead they would protect in the final period.

LaFond opened the scoring unassisted with her first collegiate goal at 12:41 of the opening period to get St. Olaf out to a 1-0 lead. Just 2:15 later, LaFond set up Welsch's second goal of the season to push the Oles' lead to 2-0 after 20 minutes.

In the second, Bethel battled back to tie the game at 2-2 on goals by Emily Roder at 4:47 and Ally Halverson on the power play at 10:57. Terebayza put St. Olaf back on top off assists from senior Maddie Anderson and first year Makenna Beaver before recording the game-winning goal from junior Mia Jutz and first year Solvei Berg-Meserole less than two minutes later.

Anderson, Beaver, and Jutz's second-period assists were their first points of the season and Beaver's marked the first point of her collegiate career. Lindsey Albers netted the lone goal of the third period for the Royals just 1:53 in, but first year Hannah Fritz saved Bethel's final eight shots on goal down the stretch.

Fritz improved to 3-1-0 on the season by making a season-high 23 saves for St. Olaf, while Ashley Hess had 22 saves in the loss for Bethel. Both teams had 26 shots on goal on the afternoon. The Royals scored the lone power-play goal of the game but were just 1-for-7 with the skater advantage.

The Oles continue MIAC play with a series against Hamline University next weekend, beginning with a 7 p.m. start at TRIA Rink in St. Paul on Friday, Nov. 18.
