ST. PAUL, Minn. – The St. Olaf College women's hockey team extended its best-ever start to a season to 5-1-1 with a 2-0 road victory over Hamline University on Friday night at TRIA Rink.
First year
Hannah Fritz recorded her second shutout in three starts and St. Olaf (5-1-1, 3-0-0 MIAC) got third-period goals from sophomore
Sophie McBane and first year
Molly Terebayza in the win. The win was the first for the Oles over Hamline (3-3-0, 2-1-0 MIAC) since Jan. 18, 2014, snapping the Pipers' 14-game unbeaten streak (12-0-2) in the series, and gave St. Olaf three-straight wins to open Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) play for the second time in program history (2003-04).
With the game still scoreless, McBane broke the deadlock with a power-play goal at 6:08 of the third period, firing the puck home from low on the left side off an assist from classmates
Lauren Spear and
Grace Lankas. The goal was McBane's third of the season, while Spear collected her third assist and Lankas earned her team-leading sixth assist.
A little over three minutes later, Terebayza gave the Oles an insurance goal with an unassisted tally for her fourth goal in the last three games and her team-leading fifth of the season. The first year blocked a shot before out-skating the Hamline defenders to score on a breakaway to make it a 2-0 game.
Fritz took care of the rest, stopping all 24 shots on goal the Pipers generated to improve to 4-1-0 on the season. Olivia Renzel made 22 stops in the loss for the hosts, who were 0-for-3 on the power play in the game.
The two teams complete their series on Saturday, Nov. 19 at 3 p.m. at St. Olaf Ice Arena.
