Second-seeded Oles host fifth-seeded Royals in MIAC semifinals

NORTHFIELD, Minn. – The second-seeded and regionally-ranked St. Olaf College men's soccer team begins its run in the 2022 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) Men's Soccer Playoffs by hosting fifth-seeded Bethel University in the semifinals on Wednesday afternoon.

St. Olaf (11-5-1, 7-2-1 MIAC) secured its third-straight berth in the MIAC Playoffs and earned the No. 2 seed with a 7-2-1 mark in the regular season, edging Macalester College for the No. 2 seed and a bye into the semifinals by virtue of the head-to-head tiebreaker. The Oles host fifth-seeded Bethel (10-8-1, 5-5-0 MIAC) in the semifinals at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 2 at Rolf Mellby Field.

Per MIAC policy, admission will be charged for all postseason games. Tickets are $10 adults and $2 for students. Children five and under are admitted for free. The St. Olaf athletic department will cover the cost for St. Olaf students who show their student ID at the ticket table. Live video and live stats will be available for those unable to attend the game.

Wednesday's other semifinal pits sixth-seeded Saint John's University at top-seeded and regular-season champion Gustavus Adolphus College at 2 p.m. in St. Peter. The Johnnies and Royals both recorded 1-0 upset victories in the quarterfinals on Tuesday, as Saint John's knocked out third-seeded Macalester College and Bethel eliminated fourth-seeded Carleton College. The winners of Wednesday's two semifinals will vie for the MIAC Playoffs title and an automatic berth into the NCAA Tournament on Saturday, Nov. 2 at 1 p.m. at the site of the highest remaining seed.

St. Olaf is making its 10th all-time appearance in the MIAC Playoffs and has qualified for the postseason tournament in all of its three full seasons under head coach Travis Wall. The Oles own a 7-7 record in the MIAC Playoffs and won tournament titles in both 2011 and 2015. Last season, St. Olaf advanced to the championship game before falling, 2-1, on its home turf to Carleton.

In just its second appearance in the MIAC Playoffs, Bethel picked up its first victory in the tournament with the 1-0 win at Carleton on Tuesday. Sophomore Youssef Abdallah netted the lone goal of the game for the Royals in the 54th minute, as Bethel snapped a 10-match losing streak to the Knights. The Royals' 10 wins this season are its most since 2009.

Wednesday's semifinal is the first-ever postseason meeting between St. Olaf and Bethel. The Oles won the regular-season meeting between the two programs by a 1-0 score on Sept. 13, thanks to an 85th-minute header off a corner kick by first year Caspar Olseth. St. Olaf outshot Bethel by a 27-7 margin in the game. The Oles have won the last four head-to-head meetings in the series by a combined score of 12-1.
