NORTHFIELD, Minn. – Senior
Ashton Altmann recorded the first two-goal game of his collegiate career to lead the St. Olaf College men's hockey team to a 4-2 victory over Marian University to finish off a weekend sweep on Sunday afternoon at St. Olaf Ice Arena.
Altmann scored twice in a three-goal second period for St. Olaf (7-1-1), which stretched its unbeaten streak to seven games (6-0-1) with the win over Marian (3-6-0). The Oles have outscored their opponents by a 23-12 margin during the unbeaten run and have allowed two goals or fewer in six of the seven games.
Senior
Evan Shoemaker and sophomore
Tyler Cooper also scored in the win for St. Olaf, as Cooper joined Altmann with a multi-point afternoon by adding an assist. Nine Oles recorded at least one point in the victory.
After a scoreless first period, Cooper started the three-goal second period at the 5:23 mark by poking the puck home after sophomore
Troy Bowditch drove to the net and had his initial shot saved. The goal was Cooper's team-leading sixth of the season and his fifth in the last six games, while Bowditch earned his team-leading 10th assist of the season.
Altmann scored the next two goals for the Oles, putting in a rebound off a shot by first year
Jonathan Panisa on the power play at 8:44 before tipping in a centering pass from Cooper less than eight minutes later. Marian got one goal back on a power-play goal of its own at 18:26 to make it a 3-1 game through two periods.
The score remained 3-1 until Shoemaker netted his first goal of the season at 12:28 of the third period by firing home a one-timer off a feed from first year
Pavel Karasek. Junior
Sam Mudd also picked up his first assist of the season on the goal.
Trailing by three with less than three minutes remaining, the Sabres pulled their goaltender with 2:33 remaining and the move quickly paid off, as Daunte Fortner netted an extra-attacker goal nine seconds later to make cut the St. Olaf lead to 4-2. Marian again pulled their goaltender shortly after the faceoff but could not find another goal.
Sophomore
Thomas Lalonde ran his record to 3-0-0 on the season by making a season-high 28 saves in the win for St. Olaf, while Aaron Brunn fell to 0-2-0 despite a 27-save afternoon for Marian.
The Oles return to Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) play with a series against nationally-ranked Augsburg University next weekend. Puck drop for the series opener is set for 7 p.m. at Ed Saugestad Rink in Minneapolis on Friday, Dec. 2.
