Oles to meet Gusties Saturday for MIAC Men's Soccer Playoffs title

NORTHFIELD, Minn. – The second-seeded St. Olaf College men's soccer team heads to top-seeded and fifth-ranked Gustavus Adolphus College for the championship game of the 2022 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) Men's Soccer Playoffs on Saturday afternoon.

St. Olaf (12-5-1) wrapped up a 9-0-0 regular season at home with a 3-0 victory over fifth-seeded Bethel University in the semifinals on Wednesday afternoon to reach the title game for the second-straight season. The reward is a trip to St. Peter to meet unbeaten Gustavus (14-0-4) on Saturday, Nov. 5 at 1 p.m. at Gustie Soccer Field. In addition to winning the tournament title, the winner of Saturday's game receives the MIAC's automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament.

Per MIAC policy, admission will be charged for all postseason games. Tickets are $10 adults and $2 for students. Children five and under are admitted for free. Live video and statistics will be available for those unable to attend the game.

St. Olaf is appearing in the championship game of the MIAC Playoffs for the fifth time and is 2-2 in its four title game appearances since the tournament began in 2003. The Oles won tournament titles in 2011 and 2015 and finished as the runner-up in both 2007 and 2021.

Saturday's game is the second-ever meeting between St. Olaf and Gustavus in the championship game and the seventh time that the top-two seeds meet for the title. The Gusties won the lone prior encounter by a 2-0 margin in 2007 when Gustavus was the No. 2 seed and St. Olaf was the No. 4 seed. The 2007 title game is the lone previous postseason meeting between the two programs.

Gustavus got a 71st-minute goal from sophomore Clarence Weah to defeat sixth-seeded Saint John's University, 1-0, in its semifinal on Wednesday to book its spot in its eighth appearance in the championship game. The Gusties have won all seven of their prior title games (2003, 2004, 2006, 2007, 2012, 2014, 2019) and their season MIAC postseason championships are the most of any program in the conference.

In the regular-season meeting between the two teams, then-No. 8-ranked Gustavus edged St. Olaf, 2-1, in St. Peter on Oct. 15 thanks to a 65th-minute game-winning goal by Owen Johnson, which came after junior Casey McCloskey had tied the game less than 15 minutes earlier. The Gusties are 4-1-1 in the last six meetings in the series since 2016 after the Oles lost just one (4-1-3) of the eight encounters from 2008-15.
