Bechtel, Buzakovic pick up major honors in MIAC Men's Soccer Awards

BLOOMINGTON, Minn. – Sophomore Shea Bechtel was named the Offensive Player of the Year and first year Robi Buzakovic was tabbed the Rookie of the Year, as five members of the St. Olaf College men's soccer team were honored in the 2022 Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) Men's Soccer Awards on Tuesday afternoon.

Bechtel – the 2021 MIAC Rookie of the Year – collected his second-straight major award from the conference, while Buzakovic made it back-to-back MIAC Rookie of the Year honorees for St. Olaf. Juniors Victor Gaulmin and Casey McCloskey joined the duo on the MIAC All-Conference Team, while classmate Clemente Arcuch Puig earned Honorable Mention All-MIAC honors. St. Olaf's four all-conference selections were tied for the most of any MIAC program.

Bechtel picked up MIAC Offensive Player of the Year honors after recording four goals and a conference-best nine assists for 17 points in nine MIAC games this season. The sophomore's nine assists were three more than any other student-athlete in the conference and his four goals also ranked in the top 10. Bechtel's 13 overall assists this season are tied for the most by an Ole in recorded program history and are tied for fourth nationally.

Buzakovic earned MIAC Rookie of the Year honors for his play in the center of St. Olaf's midfield and recorded two goals and two assists while playing the second-most minutes (750) of any Ole in conference play. The Fargo, N.D. product scored both of St. Olaf's goals, including the game-winner with 1:01 remaining, in Saturday's MIAC Playoffs championship game victory at fifth-ranked Gustavus Adolphus College after logging a goal and an assist in the team's win over Bethel University in the semifinals.

Gaulmin received his second-straight All-MIAC accolade after leading the conference in goals (9) and points (22) in MIAC regular-season contests. He scored at least one goal in seven of St. Olaf's 10 conference games and ranked second in the conference in shots (35) and shots on goal (15) against MIAC opponents.

McCloskey also hauled in his second consecutive All-MIAC honor after tying for second among MIAC student-athletes with six goals in conference play. He also added four assists during the regular season to tie for fifth in the conference and his tally of 16 points ranked fourth in the MIAC.

Arcuch Puig was one of seven student-athletes to land on the honorable mention list for his play in central midfield. The junior fired the third-most shots (31) in the conference in MIAC play and assisted on Buzakovic's late game-winning goal in Saturday's title game win in St. Peter.

St. Olaf takes on Lake Forest College in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament on Saturday, Nov. 12 at 8 p.m. at Benedetti-Wehrli Stadium on the campus of North Central College in Naperville, Ill. The Oles are making their second-straight appearance in the national tournament for the second time in program history (1998-99).
